Hillis has created his own mess, now he has lost his composure. Need to get him out of there. He's not pitching like a number one pitcher. He has hit 2 or3 batters and walked four or five and spiked the ball out of frustration to give up a base. Lufkin is down 4-1 after 5 and haven't really hit anything but singles. Several right at players that could have scored some Panther runs.

Lufkin drops the first game of their series with Forney 4-1. Game #2 on Fridat night in Bullard.  We hit the ball well but right at folks and played great D. You just can't hit people and walk people on base and throw a wild pitch, those were a killer. Forney was great at bunting guys over and scoring guys on about 3 fielders choice hits. Don't think Forney had but 4 real hits on the night, two were bunts. The Lufkin D got Hillis out of several jams tonight or it would have been worse. Hillis did not have his best game, he got frustrated and showed it.

On to Friday and a must win.

Forney got its leadoff batter on base in each of the first five innings Hillis hit the first batter, Dylan Clark, on the first pitch of the game then walked Aiden Sims. That's how he started and the inning ended in putting the Panthers in a 2 run hole.

https://lufkindailynews.com/sports/high_school/forney-takes-4-1-win-over-pack-in-game-1-of-best-of-three-regional/article_5ba9676e-133a-11ef-b4b1-ebf87cdd2998.html

Hillis allowed four runs on six hits, walked four and hit two batters in five innings. The article doesn't cover him spiking the ball behind home plate after a wild pitch allowing a Forney runner to advance from 2nd to 3rd base after Forney scored their 4th run. The Panther D turned a double play to get out of the inning and save further damage.  The Panthers only had 5 hits all singles, however there were probably 5 other hard hits that were right at a Forney player.  Lufkin was getting their bats on the ball and played great D.  Just can not walk or hit batters with no outs against Forney because they will steal the base or bunt them over. They take the opportunities you give them.  If the Pack are to win on Friday, they must eliminate the easy on base gifts.

Lufkin taking on Forney in Game #2 of their 3rd Round Playoff series tonight at 7 PM in Bullard. Pack are down 1-0 after dropping their first game 4-1. Let's Go Pack!

I think something that has not been talked about in this series is the fact that Forney is actually a 6A team in enrollment, and have been since  August, 2022.  Their snap count numbers in Oct 2021 kept them just under the line in 5A, while North Forney moved to 6A. By the beginning of the 2022 school year, Forney was 103 student over the 5A limit of 2150. They turned in 2482 on snap shot day in Oct, 2023.  The 5A cut off was 2224.

Just want to say that Bullard has one nice NEW baseball / Softball Complex. Not as much seating as Lufkin or as tall, but a lot more area for folding chairs and larger walkways to get around the stands.  There is a lot more space in foul territory that played into the game Wednesday night as there were about 3 foul ball hit by Panthers that would have been out of play in our Lufkin park.  Both were built by the same contractor, Berry and Clay.

They even have 12 new tennis courts, Lufkin only has 6 tennis courts??  It's an impressive athletic facility for a 4A school.

Nice win by the Pack.  Lindsey pitched a great game, solid and in control the whole night. Forney complains about everything. Said Lindsey's cleats were too long for a turf field.  The Forney coach smoozes between innings with the officials and umpire.  Lufkin D makes the big plays, Forney keeps trying to run on them and the Pack D keeps holding up well.  Big night for Austin Lindsey on the mound, what a gutsy effort with 113 pitches and a complete game.   Forney brought brooms with them tonight, I told a couple they could put them away now in a place where we could not see them. If you know what I mean. On to Longview, we will have Cooper Knight on the mound, I feel good about our chances.  The winner of tomorrow's game will face Frisco Lone Star in the next round.

BULLARD — It took three rounds into the playoffs before the Lufkin Panthers were faced with an elimination game. Once they did, they looked to Austin Lindsey to take the mound.

Lindsey, who had been the Panthers’ No. 2 pitcher throughout the season, responded with a complete-game shutout and the Panthers took a 1-0 win over the Forney Jackrabbits to force a third and deciding game in the regional quarterfinal series.

Game 3 is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday in Longview.

Lindsey entered the seventh inning with 103 pitches, just seven short of the 110 per game limit.

Lindsey got No. 8 hitter Logan Wells to ground out, then got a three-pitch strikeout of pinch hitter Zach Giordano, ending the at-bat with his 109th pitch.

Lindsey struck out the Jackrabbits’ leadoff hitter Dylan Clark on three pitches, leaving Texas A&M commit Aiden Sims in the on-deck circle at game’s end.

”He outcompeted them," Lufkin head coach John Cobb said. "He’s our competition champion, which is a big deal in our program, and that’s why he was throwing the elimination game. He mixed his speeds and hit his spots, and we played unbelievable defense behind him.

“It was big that he finished the game and we didn’t have to throw an arm in there and our arms are fresh for tomorrow.”

Lindsey’s effort made a first-inning run off Forney’s Sims stand up. An RBI single by Jadon Grigson scored Cooper Knight for the only run on the night.

”We got that timely hit in the first and you don’t ever think one run in the first inning is going to be the difference in the game, but it was,” Cobb said.

The Panthers’ run in the first came after Knight drew a walk moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a balk.

Sims, who recently returned from an injury, struck out the next two batters. With two strikes, Grigson came through with a solid single to score Knight and put the Panthers in front 1-0.

Lindsey allowed four walks and four hits in the game and worked out of trouble in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

A throwing error on a ground ball in the second turned into an out as Forney’s Andrew Swint tried to advance to second on the error, but Lufkin first baseman Francisco Serrano got the ball in time to throw to Grant Stafford at second for the second out of the inning. Lindsey struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Lindsey gave up a hit and walked two in the fourth but a caught stealing on a throw from Grigson to Stafford got the second out and Lindsey again came through with a strikeout to end the threat.

Forney’s Caleb Turner reached on an error to lead off the sixth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Chris Germanos hit into a fielder’s choice and Turner was tagged out in a rundown. A ground ball out ended the inning with Lufkin stil up 1-0.

Lufkin’s next biggest threat came in the fifth against Sims.

Jack Bowers led off with a walk and Jace Camp was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Lindsey moved the runners to second and third. Sims got a strikeout for the second out and was pulled as his pitch count reached 78.

Reliever Ryan Huffman got a strikeout to end the fifth and set the Panthers down in order in the sixth.

Grigson had two singles for Lufkin’s only hits on the night.

Lindsey finished the game with five strikeouts.

Hitters for Forney were Clark, Ben Sheppard, Germanos and Turner with singles.

Sims went 4 2/3 innings in the loss, allowing one run on two hits and two walks, with nine strikeouts. Huffman had one strikeout in 1 1 / 3 innings.

Best we can find, the tickets for the game in Longview will be at the gate only, credit card ONLY!  Longview does not have an online ticket access.  Hometown Ticketing is a great access used by Lufkin and Bullard.  You can even scan the code at the gate and buy the ticket, it's easy.

Two errors in last two innings opened the door for Forney to come back with a walk off 4-3 win to end Lufkin's season at 28-8. A great year and a thrid round appearance. Hats off to the Seniors. Go Pack!

What a great run these Panthers has this year. By most accounts a surprise year, I don't  know, guess the real baseball fans telling me those things would know better than I. Just know from what I witnessed, these Seniors really stood up to make this happen, and helped make this great run into the third round.  It was fun to watch them, it's fun to win, it's fun to win in the playoffs. I don't know when Lufkin baseball will again have three players (Hillis, Lindsey and Knight) who could all interchange as the #1 pitcher. What a blessing to have three guys on your team who can pitch that well.  All those Seniors will be missed, they always are because they are the heart of a baseball team. Several starters will return too including Grant Stafford and Demaraea Rodriguez.

Now for the LONG wait until football begins. This has been a fun baseball season.
