  1. Good luck to the Lufkin Lady Pack against Hallsville in the playoffs.
  2. Spring practice is just that to me. It all looks the same for me from year to year. Too early to see anything substantial for an evaluation. I think they will be a really good team, then again I thought that last year too, so don't listen to me. Playing against each other is not the best way IMO to evaluate a team. Not sure what kind of offseason some have had (a few people have told me it has been a very productive offseason) or if players are going to camps this summer or not. Someone else who comes in here probably can comment more to that aspect. Everyone looks in top shape to me. That DL is impressive. QB Johnson, has the wheels and the arm to be a decent QB. Wheels are good, if you are not running into the back of your blocking, or stutter stepping or cutting back and forth too much. Plant your foot and go. Some have that vision, some don't. Consistency with throws are always key, holding the ball too long or not long enough are all areas that make a good QB. All of that was my assessment of him last year and the need for a lot of good experience. Frankly, they should have allowed Johnson to get all that experience last year by fire and trial. We would have been no worse off than the 6th place we finished. He will get that opportunity and experience this year. There are a couple others too, don't know who they are, they look very capable at QBs. You just can't tell much right now, big D-Line and decent size O-Line. I think there are only two returning starter on the OL. Hope we find a bigger Center, no knock on the kid who played last year, tough as nails they tell me, BUT @ 170 lb up against a 280 lb NT? You get the picture. Will they be better than the last couple of years? They are using the same scheme they do every year under Cook. Nothing is too different about the offense. The O have some awesome skill players, how will they be used? That's the big question with Green and his offensive system. It's about as bland as a saltine cracker. My Panther fan neighbor down the street calls him 50/50 Green. LOL My son years ago used to call him Bubble Screen Green. Not so much now. All catchy names, I've never been able to come up with any kind of a nick name, except I know he always runs it up the middle on the first play of every game. Same play! LOL The D is returning a bunch of guys from last season, many who have secured one to multiple scholarship offers to the next level. This group will be the strength of this team and have size on the DL and LB positions, their only loss there will be Isaiah Menefee and Cooper Conrad Will be hard to run on this group. Secondary is solid where they return almost everyone but Amarion Campbell and Brian Rogers. There were so many kids rotated in and out last year, so many coming back with experience. There is plenty of depth on the defensive side. The Waters brothers, one on defense and one on offense will be two Panthers to watch the next couple years. RB position looks different this year after Young's departure to Notre Dame, but I bet these two guys will play at least one playoff game before they leave as Panthers. Young never had the opportunity in his three year stint at Lufkin. Chinn and Phillips will be there, maybe you will see Hooper and Waters there occasionally too. There are 2 or 3 other RB, do not know their names who are up from the JV or Freshmen team last year. Maybe they are JV players this year, anyway the RB positions are not lacking. Kicking game is good, Hansard is back with a couple others. Kicking game will be fine as long as he is healthy. Had a buddy of mine get so excited one time after a Spring game, back in like 2014 or 2015 ?? The offense was on fire, everything went right and he came away declaring "Man, we are going to State this year!". We had a decent year I think (7-4), but we lost 31-10 to Longview in the 1st round in Tyler. He has never been back to a Spring game since. LOL Practice is Practice, even me, many years ago use to make a big deal about watching Practice. You kind of forget that it's pretty repetitious as a player too. It's all about getting the kinks worked out after 4 months of offseason work. I figure most positions are filled, some may still be vying to win a spot in Fall, other kids are trying to make an impression. Spring practice is just a chance for guys to prove they deserve to be a starter or get more playing time when the season begins. You hope no one get hurt in the process. No one will remember Spring ball game, I won't, but the sports people will surely remember how the 2024 ends! More later. If not, I'll be out at ABE on the May 13th, God willing, to see what possibilities are before us for 2024.

  13. I've read where QB/ATH Reggie McNeal JR (6-0, 175) has hit the HS Transfer Portal and is moving on from Houston Heights has enrolled and will play his Senior year at South Oak Cliff in 2024. As a Junior in 2023 McNeal was All District, he passed for 1450 yards and rushed for 415 and 8 TDs. The article, written by Greg Powers in DCTF, tells about his father Reggie as the 4th leading passing QB in A&M history with 6992 yards, and was on the cover of DCTF in 2005. Says absolutely nothing about him playing at Lufkin, or winning a State Title at Lufkin in 2001. South Oak Cliff also recently had four-star 2025 DE Kamauryn Morgan (6'4, 230) transfer and enroll from Red Oak . In case you missed it back on February 7th, South Oak Cliff had 32 football players signed national letters of intent to play in college. You read that right Thirty Two players. https://www.hudl.com/profile/16314165/Reggie-McNeal-Jr

  16. It was a long game, Dayton combined pitching threw at least 170 pitches in 7 innings. Whereas, Hillis at one point in the 5th inning had only thrown 48 pitches. Lufkin hitters really make the opposing pitchers work up a high pitch count. Three timely hits by the Pack and about 4 -5 sac hits produced 9 runs.

  22. All sounds enticing. It's just been this way for 12 years now, same approach, some folks are just better at being a real good coordinator, than HC/AD. Nothing at all wrong with that, you see it occur at every level of sports. Some assistants do well in the change, while others don't and go back to their coaching strength. That's not a knock on Quick's ability as a coach at all. Your mentor dies suddenly, then the job is shoved right under your nose by Superintendent Knight. What do you do in a moment of sorrow and shock? Quick, who had never been out front before, never a HC, much less an AD is thrust in as the head guy. There is no secret we have not had good playoff success these past 12 years, these last three are unacceptable. Change is coming, whether it's this year or next. How drastic or not? Guess we'll all find that one out at the same time. Ralph is an excellent choice for this community. The others mention I'm sure would too because our Lufkin kids are not much different than those playing in Longview or Center. When the time comes, it will happen. I've stopped being too concerned about it. That's all up to folks in higher decision making positions than myself.
