Terrible loss tonight! There are no excuses

Did Preston not prove himself valuable last week? Do we just not want to see the kid succeed? He had a 5’8 CB on him all night we never gave him a 1 on 1 opportunities down the field

Who is the DB coach at this point I’m convinced we are teaching our CB’s to play trail technique with no safety help ! The CB’s are getting beat the same way week to week

we are the only team that doesn’t make adjustments throughout the season

Don’t let me forget to mention the QB play is still the worst in the district!

Yeah we let a miget quarterback beat us deep several times

Sports editor Josh Havard held a question-and-answer session with Lufkin head coach Todd Quick Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers fell to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in district with a 43-36 loss to the McKinney North Bulldogs at home Friday night. Lufkin returns to action at 7 Friday night when it travels to Tyler’s Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium to take on the Tyler Lions.

Q What was the overall impression of the offense on a night it scored 39 points but came up a little short?

A There was a part of the second half where we slowed down a little and it cost us. We have to eliminate those lulls and play throughout. For the most part, I thought we moved the ball and stuck with the game plan. When they packed the box, we were able to make some plays in the air. When they laid back, we got the ground game going. For most of the night, we took what they gave us. Now we have to focus on taking advantage of every possession.

Q What were some of the defensive areas that can improve after the McKinney North game?

A There were a bunch of times the defense was in the right position to make plays and we didn’t make them. We’ve got to do a better job of finishing plays. We got them in four different third and longs and didn’t get off the field. That led to two scores. We fought our tail off to get them in the spots we want to put them in then didn’t finish the play when we had a chance.

Q How important is it to get all three phases of the game going over the final three weeks?

A We gave up one long return where we weren’t in the right spots. Other than that, I thought our special teams gave us good opportunities. We punted well and our extra points and field goals were good. At this state of the season, you have to have all three phases working well. You need to be efficient. You shouldn’t have to be working on the same thing every week. We have to finish plays in every phases of the game.

Q What is the focus going into the final three weeks of the regular season?

A It’s all still there for us if we win. The kids know that. But it all starts with taking care of the next snap, the next series, the next quarter. You’ve got to take care of the moment and everything else will take care of itself.

Don't care who your favorite team is, that Cowboys and Charger game was a great game to watch. Great football played by both teams.

Yeah I guess PA, but the Cowboys look too struggle against even the mediocre teams and those Chargers  have never been a threat.Rivers played there so long that when he left  he was elidable for Social Security and they still were irreverent 🤣

Yeah, he doesn’t allow the kids to mess around too much. But he doesn’t get on to the parents and some of the coaches near enough. I know some people raise their kids to think most of that stuff is ok, but a lot of people out there ain’t cool with their 7 year old telling other kids they are gonna bust they MF’n mouth lol

They hear that kind of language at home, then parents act as if they are surprised  when their kid says something like that 🤔

Ken Thomas. He’s aware of a lot of the issues but he can only do so much when that’s all the community has to offer.

I was just about too say that very thing, he can not get any help from the higher up's. He was forced too go flag ball this year with the youth. Now if we had good youth  coaches and I think that Thomas is, when they get too high school their talent is squandered.  As far as the language you have to remember Thomas is a career military no nonsense guy

That was actually in 2006. But you are right about things never being the same after that. I was actually implying that he could've sought out other opportunities before that. Maybe around 04 or 05. Lufkin was a premier 5A program at that time. Quick had the credentials to land a decent job some place. I'm sure part of him felt obligated to stay after Outlaw passed.

One thing that will always stick with me. Is something a SLC fan said on the old 5A Texas Board. He asked the Lufkin fans if we were sure Quick wanted to be a head coach. His reasoning was that Quick had been a DC for a while. It was prob the right move in the short term. But looking back on it, if you take the emotion out of it. And you see where the program is at now. A change in new direction should've been made.

I think fans have been more than patient with him. I remember PA saying give him a few years to run things his way. And get a full class in from middle school through HS. Think a lot of fans done just that. Gave the man a chance to get his legs under him as a HC.

As I've said before, think we have seen the best his has to offer. If there was anything in that tool box to "fix" this stuff. We would've seen it by now. Sometimes you have a home project you think you can tackle. And you give it a good go and just can't get it done. You either call in help or just step aside and let someone else take care of it. And when you step aside, you can't just hand it over to your buddy, who's been there all day trying to help you "fix" it.

Yes it was 2006, and i  remember that old 5A board also. There were SLC fans talking about the talent Lufkin had. All you have to do is look at the number of Panthers that went on to the NFL.I can only think  of  3 or four guys from Southlake that went pro. Daniels is the only one that sticks out as playing a long time. They had a kicker that played I think for the Texans a while.

I was thinking the same thing. I would actually want him to step away and end on high note. If he did somehow make a state run. His legacy here has taken a big hit as HC. He would mostly be remembered as one of the best DC to come through Lufkin. Had he left for other opportunities else where. Heck..he may found success some place outside of Lufkin. He has definitely overstayed his welcome here. This train is close to coming completely off the rails. He had some cover when he was at least making the playoffs and going one and done. Now we looking at possible 3rd straight year with no playoffs. I wouldn't want to be him going into next season. With a possible 4th straight year of no post season staring me in the face. His job may not be on the line, but he should be embarrassed about the state of the program.

The lack of winning BIG games stick out. We have came up short on just about every pivotal game with this staff. There have been some huge blunders along the way too. Like giving up that 28-0 halftime lead to Longview in the first round. Losing in the first round at HOME against Texas High. I know they had some guys return from injury. And prob better than what their record indicated. And Polk was injured for us. But we had them at home and still had more than enough to win the game. That game really showed me how far Lufkin had fallen. I remember driving right up to the stadium for a parking spot. The lot was nowhere close to being full for a 1st round game at home.

Well we all have opinions and I respect them all, but I lost faith in Quick as the DC in 2008 when Round Rock ran 4 or 5 plays and he never adjusted until it was too late. The only thing that made him look good is a lot of those kids where studs on defense, and Outlaw probably overrode some of his calls. Just think about it ,we won one championship ...one... and he was the DC. To be honest if we did not have Reggie ,we might not have won that one. Quick is plain trash as a HC, I don't like him and never will as long as he's in Lufkin as the  coach. In the western days he would be run out of town on a rail 🤣

At this point it may not matter. Although it may be a little bit of both. I'm certain the kids are frustrated about the losing. This was a confident bunch coming into varsity. A lot of them had success on that awesome freshman team. But process and development doesn't stop there. You start to go up against programs that continue the process at the varsity level. And have good coaches that put in schemes to highlight their playmakers. Lufkin offense looks about the same as it did 2 years ago. Not much changed, even though the talent at the wideout position is much improved. Preston has always been threat. They wait until the 7th game of the year to finally get him involved. He could've been an asset last year too. But he was waisted on the sidelines in favor of upperclassmen. Kevo Taylor is not far behind. That kid is electric and should have more touches. Murphy should just be the extra icing on the cake in my opinion. Throw in Kedren and a good OC would have most defenses in a bind every game. Going Preston is the main reason the offense put up numbers this game.

I suspect we will see more of the same next year. Green is losing his get out of jail card with Kedren. He has leaned on that kid for the past 3 years. I hate to think about what the offense will look like next year without him. You will also be breaking a new starting Qb. I would feel better about him if he had more meaningful reps this year. Think he will have to take his lumps the first half of next season. He could be something special by his senior year if he continues to development.  Of course a lot of this depends on how well the O-line comes together. Recent history should tell us all we need to know about the chances of that happening.

The defense still has a chance to be really good. Not sure how effective they will be, if they have to stay on the field too long. I think the offense will take a big step back next year. You lose a lot of experience with TJ and Kedren leaving.

Yes if we lose to Tyler, Hammond and others that are playing should be benched and let the one's coming next year get the experience. Young included,he has nothing to prove ND is waiting for him. Playing him to break records could cost him. One panther dad told that ND did not care if  Young did not play another down.

I don't know if any of you really read what I put here.  Have tried to be tactful in my approach to everything because I do value the kids playing and their opportunity to do so. It's a right as a high school athlete.  However this losing is getting out of hand, and if the Lufkin administration doesn't seem to mind then that is on them and I will remember them in their next election to the board.

That was a big game last night, Abe Martin was leas that half full, that should tell you something right there.  I was told before the season that over 1600 season tickets did not get renewed for 2023.  That should tell people in charge something.

Lack of attendance hurts the Band Boosters because they don't see in the concession stand, it's how they fund raise for the band and their activities. It hurts the Football Mothers Club because selling programs is a fund raiser for them.

Wait until next year, I know several more people who have told me they are not renewing their season tickets. It's just going to be the Mamma's and Daddy's of the football players, band students, drill team and cheerleaders there to watch.  Maybe 2500 in an 11,000 seat stadium.   That is what not winning football games mean in Lufkin Texas.

that's just what I stated in a earlier comment. Lufkin fans are tired of seeing the same old results. My attendance has fell completing off .I went too two games last year and so far none this year. i watch the streaming sitting in my pj's. Gave up my season tickets a few yrs ago. Until this staff is gone I will continue to stay home, old Abe will not be seeing Packfan49

I’m just tired of losing man. Next year won’t be any different. It’s the same team with some new starters sprinkled in here and there. Same staff. Same results. This team might even finish 5-5 a game worse than last years team. So if this group is so talented, that leaves one thing as the problem. Or they ain’t as good as once believed.

I,m kind of thinking in that same line as are the kids as talented as we are lead to think, or is that there are many of them just going through the motion and are just frustrated with the program in general
