You got a point there
Erik McCoy was going to be great no matter who coached him. I just don't think coach Cook is nearly as bad as we give him crap for. He isn't a people person and his coaching style is outdated but that 2017 line was legit. 2019 they weren't bad either. I'm just saying if the best tackle we have can't block a kid how is that on coaching. I can show you all the technique in the world and it won't matter if he's that much better then me. Smart coaches will go with more max protections or using 6 or 7 blockers. The other choice is to let the DE hand your tackle there play after play.

At some point between now and the start of the season, I would like to list all the Lufkin players with scholarship offers, how many offers and schools that offered.
I know Kedren Young, Zion Williams and Isaiah Menefee have several P5 offers each. There are probably others too. That is why I'm reaching out to everyone. I will start a topic or you can start a topic at some point.
I think Gavin Phillips is a for sure P5 kid. Only a matter of time. I think Elijah Alexander has a chance at DT with his size. Krisean Preston at WR will likely play D1. I think you have another 5-10 kids that will play some type of college football. I could see Evan Young or Kenneth Timmons getting some serious D1 looks at CB. Now the Waters kid that plays CB has a really high floor. He will be a sophomore next season and he was lights out this spring. Mosley another kid at FS that will probably be a D1 kid. They're loaded with talent and they know it.

Does coach Cook get credit for Erik McCoy? He's probably the best offensive lineman to ever play at Lufkin. How is he able to turn McCoy into one of the top offense lineman we have ever had? It's as if having a talented kid helps.

You play how you practice. You practice how you’re taught.
They can run block. It's pass blocking in the past that has caused problems but using more then 5 blockers like most normal teams will help by time. We asked for Green to different things and as soon as he does you have people still crying.

And that is exactly what the O line looks. Lazy. I don’t think the D line are a bunch of world beaters. Far from it. But when I watch the O line I see no fight. No dog. Nothing. Win or lose they don’t care. Blocking a 3 man rush with 6 blockers and losing is an embarrassment. At some point pride as to kick in.
Zion is as good as any NT to come out of Lufkin. The defensive line is really good as a whole. Certainly an upgrade from the last few years.
-
I think the defensive line has a lot to do with how the offensive line has looked. Zion is one of the best NT's in America. McClendon and Alexander are studs.

The Tatum at QB thing has more to do with Boosie and Mason Washington than any question marks that we have at QB. That's 2 other backs not named Tatum that will play college ball.
They're trying to get as much talent on the field as possible and Tatum, like so many other baseball studs, actually has a sneaky arm. Not a Haynes King arm but enough to be somewhat effective.
Not sure if it'll happen though. Maverick Rowe looked great this spring.
What I'm saying is you don't just replace a kid with that many starts at QB and not have a drop off most of the time. I don't think King wants to play Tatum at QB if he can help it. The Longview defense should be better but offensively I don't see how they don't take a step back.
-
I can't wait for the season to get here. They're going to be much better then people think. The optics will change after the Longview game win or lose. I expect Lufkin to be very competitive. Longview isn't replacing Jalen Hale or a 3 year starter at QB without any hiccups. If Tatum has to play QB that will be telling on it's own.

That's right, you have talked about him a few times here. Personal issues to work out. Didn't you mention he was coming back to Lufkin in 2024? Why would he do that after playing two years at Grand Oaks? Remind me what position he plays. Would he be a Junior or Senior?
He is going to play Wr at Grand Oaks. They have a kid with an A&M offer at QB in the 26 class. I think the dad wants to move him back at some point so he can play for Lufkin at least 1 year. We will see. He would be a huge addition.

That huge Lufkin line will be tough to move, they have a great rotation there. DE have good size and speed, LBs are a little bigger this year. The Lufkin front 7 will be tough to run on next year. Not worried about the secondary either. The D will be the dominated side of the team to start the year. No doubt the Lufkin O willl be good too. TJ will be fine and Javion Johnson looked pretty good to at QB in the short time we had to watch. It's great to have a really good back up.
Someone tell me more about this Wallace kid people have been talking about. I assume he will be a freshman because he was not listed on the roster last night or played on the freshman team last season.
That kid is still at Grand Oaks.

PurpleNation was correct, Zion Williams, Elijah Alexander are huge players on the line for DT, add in Brenden Baker.
Is Elijah Hurts related to Roger Hurts who played for the Pack back in 2004-2005, then played at Harding U in Searcy Arkansas? Roger is living in Searcy Arkansas today and runs his own construction company.
I'm sure all the Hurts are related somehow here lol
Zion and Alexander both looked good. Lufkin will be able to win the LOS on defense this year
-
Defense looked good for the quarter we saw. They're gonna be a solid unit this year. Preston made a couple of deep grabs.

I love defense, sounds like the D line and front 7 in general are going to be stout. Just waiting to see it all in the fall.
Stout is an understatement

As I've stated before, my hope to win is always there, but keep any expectations now to the minimum. Multiple season disappointments will do that to fans. Here's hoping again in 2023. That's all I have left.
One thing that the defense did different last practice was move Zion to DE and Elijah Alexander to Nose. Alexander played offensive line last year. Both of these guys require a double team. They have a chance to be really good up front.

I truly believe that’s not even a thought inside his head. I don’t think he cares how he leaves. Just riding the clock out and then ✌🏻. If I win some games on my way out that’s cool too. If not, 🤷🏻♂️
I dunno I think he's invested in this season coming up. At least that's how it appears. I've watched every practice this spring and he's out there working with kids and not just the starters. I can tell they're really trying to coach them up this season.

They should play the best they have to be the most successful, no matter their classification. Sorry, I don't agree with seniors getting the upper hand just because they are a senior. If they are the best at their position fine, if not the best one plays, even if it's a sophomore. If the coaches are not doing that, it's a mistake.
I'm banking they are playing the best they have going into next season. Quick is running out of opportunities to leave a true winning mark as Lufkin's head coach. His current 11 year playoff record is the perveribile thorne in his side as a coach.
I don't think they're doing that at all. I believe they're getting the best players on the field.

Could Preston play H back if needed? I mean, good BIG WR prospects too. I'm just thinking of any athlete who can play multiple offensive positions, like Mimms with LS back in 2018.
Gavin seems to be a player like that now, any others?
Yeah they could definitely use Preston at H back if they wanted to. I don't think you will see it though. I'm just glad we're utilizing that position. It puts more pressure on the defense because you can do more stuff with that guy there. Then with Gavin you can change personal without changing players. Lufkin game go from 20 to 11 personal without subbing. It's going to open the playbook up. As for other kids. I like the 10th grader Coleman in a role like that. He probably plays JV this year as the main back. I tell you kid I like I think they should look at is the Nichols kid at WR. He will be a JR next year and will probably play JV but he made some plays in the scrimmage last Wednesday. He has D1 size and length for the position. I think they really need to take a serious look at that kid.

Again I reach out for help. I see the kids at practice but do not know their names. My thoughts are, with us running the H - back with Phillips. My question is hopefully we have a backup to Gavin, a backup for T J and backup for Kedren, as it may be, so Lufkin could continue to run the same offense with any one of those guys out of the lineup.
WHO would be the backups to Young, Phillips and T J and their classification? Jersey numbers in practice are not consistent . If you know fine, if not, I can wait until Monday at the scrimmage.
Also, who are some of the # 2 guys you think could have a bigger impact as the season moves along?
I believe Murphy (SR) and Coleman(Soph) would be the next up backs. Jayvion is the back up quarterback he will also be a 10th grader next year. I think anyone on the defensive 2 deep rotation will have an impact somehow.

Like I said, really looking forward to August.
Can't get hear fast enough. Legacy and Nac will be good tune up games. Consolidated will present more of a problem but Lufkin should handle them and then we will really find out where we're at when we head to Longview. The schedule is set up nice for Lufkin this year. Key home district games. They can go anywhere from 7-3 to 9-1. Now if they beat Longview week 4 I might have to adjust my predictions lol.

Okay, I can accept the better players. That has been evident the past 3 or 4 years. Was it 2021 Lufkin only had their punter recruited?
I think but can't remember specifically but the gap between us and Longview has closed drastically from a year ago.

Im not giving him credit. I'm just saying it's not all his fault. 2017 Lufkin was pretty good upfront. Ill always be it's more about the players then coaching. Sonny Dykes and TCU are coached about as well as anyone in college football. Georgia just had better trench play and there is absolutely nothing TCU could had done about it.
