If he is a better running than TJ. The offense is zone blocking. You have Kedren and Gavin back there. I’d start the sophomore. Everyone will be keyed in on Young. Gives a good chance to get the Qb out free.

Oh yeah he is in an entirely different stratosphere as far as athlete compared to QB1. I don't know if I would start him right off the jump but I would definitely give him a series here and there and get him use to the speed of the game. Then maybe put more on his plate as the season progresses if he shows he can handle it but also depends on how good QB1 plays. It's possible he has a good season. He has played a lot of games at QB and I think experience has to account for something. The game should really slow down for him this year.

That’s my biggest concerns and where my doubts come from lol.. Too much back and forth on what to expect. Y’all know how I feel. Idc if we had the 2004 & 2005 teams back. With this staff and the talent of opponents nowadays, those teams would’ve struggled to get to the semi finals. But in purplenation I trust! He knows more than anyone else and I’m holding on to some hope.

We would had rolled through Lufkin schedule last year including Longview if we was out there 😂. I don't care who is calling the plays. Give #7 the ball or lob it up to Dez. People also forget how good McKinner Dixon really was. Then Leonard Hewitt. Come on.

How long does a running qb last? look what we run, this aint college.once or twice a drive maybe. just sayin

Yeah but just the dynamic it would add to have the threat. Defenses would have to game plan a little different. A mobile QB is almost essential in today's game. I think we see both QBs this year for sure. I think they're gonna be ok as long as they can stay healthy at key spots. The defense is  gonna be good but they're a year away from being an elite unit to where I think they will overwhelm teams and keep you in games no matter what. I'm genuinely excited for the season. I think Lufkin is going to be much better then what people think.

Just saying some things are obvious to me, and you too. Going into this season, Lufkin looks to be a 60-70% run team and carefully mixing in some timely passing to take pressure off that run game. Lufkin definitely has some good WRs to have success. The offensive set up looks predicated on using Young a lot, sprinkle in runs and swing passes to Phillips to keep people honest.  Not trying to single out WR Taylor as THE guy, because there is plenty of speed and talent in that WRs corps. However, IMO Taylor must touch the football at least 6 or 7 times a game, not counting special teams.  Not having an RPO guy at QB gives this offense a different look.  Success is predicated on Young staying healthy, and T J managing the game without the INTs.  IF something happens either one, what then??   We all know Green, if the original plan gets disrupted, what then?   Do you stick with it all using your backup guys?  IMO you must.  Who will be the backup QB on the Varsity? I assume Phillips.  Hey, I'm very interested to see what all of this O looks like come August through November, because I think there is tons of skilled talent on that side of the ball for the Panthers. Some other expert needs to come in here give their prospective for the OL play.  Also how does T J look this year compared to last year?  Someone did mention he had lost some weight and had an excellent offseason. I'm very interested to see how everything pans out for this years group. Offensively and Defensively!

Phillips will probably be used as the 3rd emergency QB. The sophomore QB will be the back up and he is definitely a threat with his legs. Just has to polish the passing game a little bit. He has some D1 upside.

There is a definite unevenness about 7 on 7 play.  Some teams run their usual passing offense that they will operate in the fall, while other teams run a 7 on 7 offense like they are running screens on a basketball court, lots of dink and dunk play.

So, it can end up an unfair evaluation, like the Mt Pleasant game, where they did a bunch of that 7 on 7 stuff and Lufkin just wasn't awake to start.  North Forney was defensive effort on both sides. Lufkin did play better and had some opportunities to score a couple more times, NF actually ran an offense like Lufkin did.  WH #2 was mostly JV players or split team that played Lufkin. Just a team to fill out the mandatory 16 teams for the SQT.  Tyler Legacy also had a #2 team there.

Don't know if Lufkin plans to play any other SQT this month to qualify for State, not a big deal in my book if they do or don't.  Good for the two QBs to get in some time connecting with their WR group under competition from other teams. I have some thoughts that I will keep to myself, don't need to say anything.  Probably about 3 or 4 games into the season, nothing will need to be said, because it will all work it's way out to become clear.

I have a good idea to what you're alluding to and I am with you on it. I still think they can have a very good season.

I also agree about teams running offense just for 7 on 7 that they won't run during the season. I don't wanna call it junk offenses but it's not gonna work in real football.

Also don't think Lufkin plays another tournament. They just don't care about this anymore. 7 on 7 has turned into a club thing for the elite kids.

Longview does not have a QB issue. Tutt did better than most out there, and they have some really good WR who actually run routes.

Lufkin beat the Whitehouse B squad, played North Forney better and close (their best showing of the day defensively) and I won't discuss the Mt Pleasant game.  Most here know  I don't put much stock in 7 on 7 being an indicator or how 11 on 11 will go down in a season.  I will get in trouble for my thoughts based on today, so I won't, because I think Lufkin will operate much differently in the fall than in 7 on 7, with everyone participating.  Then again, some things just stay the same, SMH.

Yeah 7 on 7 is such a wild card. Lufkin strength is the defensive line on defense. Offensively they didn't have Kedren and he matters more when the pads come on anyway. Not surprised My.Pleasant got on them early. Lufkin doesn't even practice 7 on 7 like that. So not surprised either to see them get better as the day goes on. Gave North Forney the best game which also means absolutely nothing.

I haven't seen Tutt play that I can remember. I saw the JV kid last year and he was ok. Not a kid you have to game plan for.

I agree. It is definately a different world out there for NCAA with NIL and transfer portals. Didn't have or could not do that back in my day, if you transferred to another school, the transferee had to sit out the whole next school year.

I blame the NCAA for this wild wild west of college football. They didn't care if the kids got payed as long as it wasn't coming out of their pocket and now with a super league on the horizon. The NCAA might be in its last days of controlling the power schools.

Well, they have a Varsity coaches who handle other positions working with powerlifting and strength training. Last season it was OLC Jeff Cook, DE Coach Chris Van Horn, DB Coach Sterling Stewart and WR Coach James Carver in those positions. Do not know if any of that has changed for 2023, but that's four coaches handling the weight training.

Unless a HS hires one of those college level strength and conditioning guys it's not gonna really matter. A kid has to want to get developed. I think people are delusional is they think the talent is the same as early 2000's it's not even close. This group is easily the most talented group since 2017 and I expect that level of play.

Zone blocking was my least favorite as a lineman. I think it’s meant to mask a little of their inefficiencies. Young will be a terror this year. I just got this feeling. Kid is healthy. Another year older. Hopefully a little faster and stronger. Should be a lot of fun.

Yeah he is in for a big season. That's why I'm glad they held him out this spring. He is going to be full go to start the season. I'm more worried about pass blocking then run blocking.

Just think if he had a great OL in front of him like Tatum in Longview, he may be ranked twice as high. IMO that's a plus for a good RB and his ranking.

How many times was Young hit in the backfield last year just as he was handed the ball? A lot more than you think, at least 4 or 5 times a game. After the first two series, most good opp Ds are able to read Green's play calling. Young got a ton of yards just on his own ability last year, just watch his highlight reel.  Hopefully the OL is much improved this year with three new members and two returning, who have a year's experience under their belt, even though I don't like the zone blocking scheme. Never have, and maybe it's because I don't understand it. Wasn't around when I played.

I think the added H back position will help. Gavin is a willing blocker. Green showed a few different things this spring but let's see if he can expand on it during the season. I agree Kedren is every bit of the RB Tatum is. Not much separates them on tape. I think they both will be successful RB1's in college one day.

Figured it was far off. That makes things hard for our kids. Wish we had some resources here

But it is worth it especially if you have a kid that's wants to play at the next level. These kids also have to hit these camps. My son that plays down here went to a rivals camp in Dallas with Gavin a few weeks ago. Plan on going to the Houston mega camp in June. He is a kid that will have to maximize his ceiling to play D1. And Vic Machado is a good resource down here for kids that can't go out of city.

Im asking because you seem to be in the know. Where would kids go around here for extra training?

It depends on the position and it wouldn't be around here and it's going to cost money. Example Krisean Preston needs to go work with Margin Hooks who has helped develop some of the top WRs in the state the last few years like Evan Stewart,Johntay Cook, Kyle Parker, Micah Hudson and even my oldest kid. He will workout kids in Waco and Dallas and you have to go to him. Bam Performance in Austin is good for DB and LB training. Now as far as local Lufkin training I would use Vic Machado. He does a good job. His son Cam Lister had really good footwork that he trained up. But you're also getting good exposure from those elite trainers that college scouts use to find kids.

I agree talent like you named has genetics on their side. But 22 play in the field and it’s the none genetically gifted  ones I want to see built. I also see your optimism as a parent wanting your kid to be on a good team. I do hope I am wrong.

It's not just wanting them to be on a good team. I really believe they have a good team. If I thought they wasn't going to be good I would be the first one. I just know what they got in that 25 class and they about to pour up.

I should probably clarify pour up lol. I think they can go 2-3 rounds deep if they stay healthy.

I’m not hating to hate. I’m stating what I see. I believe talent can be grown. You seem to think it’s only born. You seem old school, I’m more new school. I think we have established we rarely agree.

I think that's the problem. Parents not investing in there kids outside of HS practice. All the top flight recruits go to camps and play 7 on 7 and have personal trainers and these are kids that play at winning schools too. I think Lufkin develops kids just about as well as anyone. You're not making a Dez Bryant or Jorvorskie Lane. Those kids are born. I'm sure they would love to develop another Reggie McNeal too lol.
