  1. Phillips will probably be used as the 3rd emergency QB. The sophomore QB will be the back up and he is definitely a threat with his legs. Just has to polish the passing game a little bit. He has some D1 upside.
  2. I have a good idea to what you're alluding to and I am with you on it. I still think they can have a very good season. I also agree about teams running offense just for 7 on 7 that they won't run during the season. I don't wanna call it junk offenses but it's not gonna work in real football. Also don't think Lufkin plays another tournament. They just don't care about this anymore. 7 on 7 has turned into a club thing for the elite kids.
  3. Did Lufkin field a 7 on 7 team last year? Was it 2 years ago they didn't field one. When Big Jeff stopped doing it the 7 on 7 hasn't been the same since. I just couldn't see it giving Young any benefit to play it. He's a between the tackles back with home run speed.
  4. Yeah 7 on 7 is such a wild card. Lufkin strength is the defensive line on defense. Offensively they didn't have Kedren and he matters more when the pads come on anyway. Not surprised My.Pleasant got on them early. Lufkin doesn't even practice 7 on 7 like that. So not surprised either to see them get better as the day goes on. Gave North Forney the best game which also means absolutely nothing. I haven't seen Tutt play that I can remember. I saw the JV kid last year and he was ok. Not a kid you have to game plan for.
  5. I blame the NCAA for this wild wild west of college football. They didn't care if the kids got payed as long as it wasn't coming out of their pocket and now with a super league on the horizon. The NCAA might be in its last days of controlling the power schools.
  6. Unless a HS hires one of those college level strength and conditioning guys it's not gonna really matter. A kid has to want to get developed. I think people are delusional is they think the talent is the same as early 2000's it's not even close. This group is easily the most talented group since 2017 and I expect that level of play.
  7. He is on the smaller side as far as weight but does have the height and length. Ball skills are next level.
  8. Kordell Rodgers was defensive MVP for the Montreal Alouettes last pre-season game. He had 1 INT and 3 PBUs. If he can stay healthy and keep making plays. I think the NFL will come calling. He was 2nd in the NCAA last season defending passes when targeted. He just needs a chance.
  9. Yeah he is in for a big season. That's why I'm glad they held him out this spring. He is going to be full go to start the season. I'm more worried about pass blocking then run blocking.
  10. I think the added H back position will help. Gavin is a willing blocker. Green showed a few different things this spring but let's see if he can expand on it during the season. I agree Kedren is every bit of the RB Tatum is. Not much separates them on tape. I think they both will be successful RB1's in college one day.
  11. Yeah he is 82nd and the on3 Industry rankings have him 182. The only other site that has him ranked is Rivals and it's at 212. His 247 composite is 207. So overall a little underrated imo.
  12. On3 has him at 80 something overall in the nation. Not all recruiting services have him underrated. But I agree he should be a consensus Top 100 player across the board
  13. But it is worth it especially if you have a kid that's wants to play at the next level. These kids also have to hit these camps. My son that plays down here went to a rivals camp in Dallas with Gavin a few weeks ago. Plan on going to the Houston mega camp in June. He is a kid that will have to maximize his ceiling to play D1. And Vic Machado is a good resource down here for kids that can't go out of city.
  14. It depends on the position and it wouldn't be around here and it's going to cost money. Example Krisean Preston needs to go work with Margin Hooks who has helped develop some of the top WRs in the state the last few years like Evan Stewart,Johntay Cook, Kyle Parker, Micah Hudson and even my oldest kid. He will workout kids in Waco and Dallas and you have to go to him. Bam Performance in Austin is good for DB and LB training. Now as far as local Lufkin training I would use Vic Machado. He does a good job. His son Cam Lister had really good footwork that he trained up. But you're also getting good exposure from those elite trainers that college scouts use to find kids.
  15. It's not just wanting them to be on a good team. I really believe they have a good team. If I thought they wasn't going to be good I would be the first one. I just know what they got in that 25 class and they about to pour up. I should probably clarify pour up lol. I think they can go 2-3 rounds deep if they stay healthy.
  16. I do think there is something to player development at the HS level. I just believe you can only develop a certain kid so much. Every kid has a different ceiling and floor. I've been satisfied with my kids development. But he's also staying after practice working. Some kids have to want it.
  17. I think that's the problem. Parents not investing in there kids outside of HS practice. All the top flight recruits go to camps and play 7 on 7 and have personal trainers and these are kids that play at winning schools too. I think Lufkin develops kids just about as well as anyone. You're not making a Dez Bryant or Jorvorskie Lane. Those kids are born. I'm sure they would love to develop another Reggie McNeal too lol.
  18. Im not giving him credit. I'm just saying it's not all his fault. 2017 Lufkin was pretty good upfront. Ill always be it's more about the players then coaching. Sonny Dykes and TCU are coached about as well as anyone in college football. Georgia just had better trench play and there is absolutely nothing TCU could had done about it.
  19. Erik McCoy was going to be great no matter who coached him. I just don't think coach Cook is nearly as bad as we give him crap for. He isn't a people person and his coaching style is outdated but that 2017 line was legit. 2019 they weren't bad either. I'm just saying if the best tackle we have can't block a kid how is that on coaching. I can show you all the technique in the world and it won't matter if he's that much better then me. Smart coaches will go with more max protections or using 6 or 7 blockers. The other choice is to let the DE hand your tackle there play after play.
  20. I think Gavin Phillips is a for sure P5 kid. Only a matter of time. I think Elijah Alexander has a chance at DT with his size. Krisean Preston at WR will likely play D1. I think you have another 5-10 kids that will play some type of college football. I could see Evan Young or Kenneth Timmons getting some serious D1 looks at CB. Now the Waters kid that plays CB has a really high floor. He will be a sophomore next season and he was lights out this spring. Mosley another kid at FS that will probably be a D1 kid. They're loaded with talent and they know it.
  21. Does coach Cook get credit for Erik McCoy? He's probably the best offensive lineman to ever play at Lufkin. How is he able to turn McCoy into one of the top offense lineman we have ever had? It's as if having a talented kid helps.
  22. They can run block. It's pass blocking in the past that has caused problems but using more then 5 blockers like most normal teams will help by time. We asked for Green to different things and as soon as he does you have people still crying.
