All this fighting and jawing and crap that goes on, and is allowed by some teams coaches today as an intimidation factor will be the demise of anything enjoyable about HS football in the future. You've already seen that junk at the youth league levels for years now, the parents are just as bad.  The kids are never corrected, in fact they are probable encouraged to make it all about themselves. No normal football fan like me wants to go and watch selfish athletes with low character play a game.  It's certainly hard to play if your having to decide whether to defend yourself or not.  Lufkin doesn't need to learn to be that way, they need to be above it all.  For all the great athletes Lancaster gets year after year, they have little to show for it, just for the reasons talked about above. No discipline.

    Agree 100%
They were about as bad as Forney. The best way to shut a team like that up, is bust their butt on the field.

  2. I went to the JV game yesterday. Lancaster was all over Lufkin before you could blink. Believe it was 18-0 1st qtr. They blitz the entire game and we couldn’t stop it. Also had trouble snapping the ball and couldn’t get a good punt off because of constant pressure. The team did settle down some once Kenneth Waters moved over to Qb. He had the speed and quickness to make up for the lack of protection. Broke a few long runs. Final score 40-20 Lancaster.

There was also big fight on the Lufkin sidelines. One of their players punched a Lufkin player while pushing him out of bounds. The two started going at it. And most of Lancaster bench cleared and ran over to Lufkin side to join in. Took the coaches and refs a a minute to settled everyone down. Those guys were jawing the whole time. Lufkin program will have to toughen up overall to really compete with some of these schools. Hope varsity can come and do something later. Just to shut those fans and players up.

I’d disagree with this. Quick makes $130k. Money is there. Staff size is pretty large compared to some schools. The resources can easily be there but people believe Lufkin has pretty dated football facilities while if you look around we are probably bottom half of 5A schools.

Not disagreeing with this. But they won't offer Ralph that much money.  And the facilities are pretty outdated. Honestly a lot 4A schools have better facilities than Lufkin. There was a time Lufkin was somewhat ahead of the curve. I believe we were one of the first to have a jumbotron out this way. Along with the indoor workout facility.

It's been a sparse 12 years, and probably wasn't expected by most since John Outlaw was his mentor. He is currently 85-49 as HC, and 6-9 in playoff games. What doesn't show up here are some of the blow out losses Quick has taken here, that Outlaw never did in his 17 years.

So 15 more wins will get him to 100. He may stick around long enough to reach it.

  5. All this talk about records and milestones got me to thinking. Are there any records or personal milestones Quick has broken or approaching? You would think there would be at least a couple after being here so long. What are his current career highlights here as HC? I would say a playoff win against Westfield and maybe 1 or 2 district championships. Thats all I can really think of. Guess you could throw in getting us back to the 3rd round of the playoffs after a long drought.

  6. It's another big game and opportunity for Lufkin to prove themselves. The optimist will say Lufkin can still turn this season around. One BIG win by enough points opens the door to the playoffs. Everyone starts back over with zero wins. You then have a chance to turn your season around.

BUT..if we being pessimistic. We have yet to win a big game this year. Even against a very beatable Tyler team. You also look at the history of Quick in big games. Not much to see there. So why should the last game of the season against one the better teams in district be any different? You look at the district standing and you see we have only beaten the bottom feeders in this district.

The only silver lining in all of this. Is that we have guys that can play. Kedren, Preston, Taylor, and Murphy are exceptional skill players. We have two solid DTs and a stud at Lb along with a talented, but inexperienced secondary. So our tank is not completely empty. Unfortunately none of that has been enough up to this point.

With a possible third hanging in the balance. SMH

On another note, saw Quick somewhat animated a couple times on the sidelines last evening, ripped a little on the officials, even toward Coach Myers for not kicking off deep to the corner once. There are no unrealities that exist in the Panther camp.  We say no one in the district notices, they do and they know. No smoke and mirrors exist.

The excuse bucket has ran dry. I believe the "Lufkin has not talent" excuse card can finally be removed from the deck. It's been a convenient and easy out for while. Most of us know we don't have loaded rosters with players like Dez, Lane, McNeal, Dixon, etc. Like years past, but we have had more than enough to have shown better over the last 12 years.

Wait until a few years, that new coach might have them back in Cujo mode

Longview eventually pulled away. But Tyler did have a pulse for most of the game. The new guy definitely has them headed in the right direction.

Glad to see Kedren get the record. Would love to see him get a chance in the playoffs. But then again, not sure the extra hits in what would most likely be a one and done. Would be worth the risk. He's moving on to better things.

Does anyone still talk to Ralph. Would he even take the job here if the call came?

Thats a good question. He is married with kids now. I don't know anything about his wife. But convincing the wifey to move to Lufkin, could be a challenge. And that goes for anyone married looking to relocate from the city. Plus coaching in small town like Lufkin comes with its own unique politics. Not sure I would want to coach here and have to deal with family and old friends in my ear about their kids. Some people think you owe them something, just because they grew up with you. I want a new staff in place ASAP! But even I know Lufkin could be a hard sell. The outdated facility and being way out here in deep ETX doesn't do us any favors.

Not sure about Dixon. Think he has had enough with this area. I don't think he would want to come back. But you never know.

This is just really unbelievable on the one hand and very believable on the other because it has happened so often.  It shows just how far Lufkin deteriorates as the year wears on. We are out-coached almost every game of the year, and its less noticeable in Weeks 0-3 bc the more detail-oriented coaches need 2-4 weeks before they get in fully sync.

So, this super awesome freshman group from two years ago had no QB?  That part confuses me.  The OC is basically saying we are so weak at qb I'm not even going to try and gameplan something beyond 8th grade level stuff.  I think the coaches have gotten really good at excuse-making so they can round up their retirements to 30 years.

They had a Qb(Gavin) but he was moved to a different position. I was in favor of them turning it over to him after the Lancaster game. He might not have been as polished as Hammonds, but the dude was gamer and had chemistry with Preston. Unfortunately he wasn't available anyway.

The staff decided to invest 3 years into Hammonds and it didn't pay off. Not his fault the line was bad and he wasn't put in the best position to be successful. I think you need a mobile Qb or a true gun slinger if you gonna run any type of spread offense.

Got called out a little bit by a HS girl last night for getting upset with Green. She didn't understand why so many folks in the stand were hollering at him. She said she liked him and didn't understand why losing was a big deal, "they're doing the best they can" she said, and that's the problem right there. It's totally a generational thing, losing matters more to me, evidently not so much to others.

And she just a young HS girl. She has no understanding of what has happened to this program, or the dynamics at play that continue to hinder it. She simply wants to cheer them on. They played hard, as Quick would say, and thats all that matters to her. Plus these kids weren't around during the glory years. They only know Lufkin as being an average to below average team. The highlight of the  year for them is beating Nacogdoches. They don't see the faded image of an apex Lion that was once our program like we do. Losing big games and no playoff success is the norm for them. They don't know anything different.

A good point that has been there all year. T J was never a threat to run, and it does make a difference in pass coverage on our WR.  I can hardly watch when they roll TJ out on plays, it looks like such an unnatural move for him and he can never get his feet set on the move to throw accurately. It's not his fault, he is doing the best he can, he is just not a RPO spread offensive QB. it's like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.  He is more likely to be successful running the Power I and being the Tom Brady type pocket passer, of course we have him running the spread with no real option for him to run. You see that is on the OC for not changing and adapting the offense to the talent he has any given season. I really don't like talking about it, that guys been a frustration for myself and many others to watch for too many years now.

I been saying this for a while. Plug him at Longview and he would be fine. That scheme would make his life a lot easier.

  13. The whole program needs a make over. We knew Lufkin would have to step it up when we saw who would be in our district. Lufkin always had a speed and athleticism advantage vs most of the teams in our old Houston districts. Doesn't matter what district we are in next year. If we continue doing the same stuff.

So let's say we are placed in a weak district. What's the reward for making the playoffs? Most likely facing a team from a much more competitive district. Which gets us back to being one and done. Get your program fixed and you don't have to worry about such things. Longview doesn't worry about stuff like that. They actually want good teams in their district. It's a chance for them to prove how good they are. There was a time Lufkin was the same.

But I'm just saying that was a dumb decision to kneel the ball. If Quick did something like that you guys would come unglued lol. That just wasn't smart. I guess they could beat Longview or Forney but good luck with that. That's just not being aware of the situation.

I think it was more him just wanting to secure the win. And playing the numbers game. What are the chances of Lufkin beating Lancaster vs them potentially turning the ball over and Lufkin possibly scoring. When it's all said and done, neither will be moving on. Unless Forney decides to rest most of their players the last game and give Tyler a shot.

Tyler coaches aren't perfect. I did see some head scratching moments. McFalls should be more involved in that offense. He's too dynamic of a player not to have more touches. But of course it's hard to out bad Lufkin when it comes to coaching. Lol

The only team we have managed to beat. Is the bottom dweller. And we struggled with them well into the second half of that game. It's just a bad look for this program.
