“There’s two or three different kinds of playoff teams.”  “There’s those who get there and spend all the time congratulating themselves and patting themselves on the back. They won’t last long. Then there’s those who get there, but it’s a beatdown, Man, that's not it either, or you get ready to play your 14th game… Even though it ought to be the most exciting time in your life, you’re a little bit tired, and you just can’t keep on keepin’ on.

Then there’s the group that is going to come in and brace themselves for the long haul and clock in and clock out every day. It doesn’t mean they’re going to be [champions], but they got the best chance to win. We’ need to be working hard and raising our kids’ awareness level. We’ve got to be in that third group.”

Plus, Tradition is should be used to connect each team versus divide them.

Being consistent and setting high standards for everyone is also important. I think winning becomes a habit when everything is clicking. You'll stay afloat even during the down years. I wonder if there is much tradition left in Lufkin? There was a time, when each new group new what it meant to wear that Panther jersey. It came with the expectations of long playoff runs and never give up attitude. We haven't been consistent enough to get anything going. Nothing to be passed down from one group to the next.

Maybe that begins to change this year. It won't be long before we all find out. I went back and watched all the games between Lufkin and Longview's Freshmen, JV and Varsity. I saw the same thing in all three games. Better blocking, execution, play calling, and overall more aggressive. Not more talented, just better coached and overall better ran program from top to bottom. King talks about being consistent for the last decade.

Okay, Thanks. He has changed numbers since the Spring roster.

Looks like a good group of secondary guys, maybe some depth there too.  We look sharp in those white road unis, we didn't wear them much last year. They would also look good wearing black pants with their purple jersey's at home.  The only time they should wear those purple pants, are with the white or black jersey, maybe gold jersey.  Chad likes the gold jersey, I'm not a big fan, but who's listening to me??? LOL

The white does look nice. These are the 2017/18 jerseys if I remember correctly. Believe we skipped a few years and now bringing them back.

The Lufkin Daily says "Administrative Leave".

    https://lufkindailynews.com/news/community/lufkin-isd-superintendent-seeking-administrative-leave/article_f7f339cd-7142-5db2-9cfd-032805515e0d.html

Lufkin ISD superintendent Lynn Torres submitted a request to the board of trustees Friday morning to be placed on administrative leave through the end of the 2023-24 school year, with full pay and benefits.

While confirming the request, Wayne Haglund, staff attorney for the district, said the move had no connection to the controversy about the content of Monday's convocation for staff members during which a Prince impersonator performed.

Trustees have had concerns about the fiscal management of the district since they approved a deficit budget last year, board president Kristi Gay said.

That budget included a 3.5% raise for employees and drew on $4.4 million from the district’s reserves.

Gay said they issued a directive for Torres and the administrative staff to work on closing the gap between revenue and expenses beginning the very next day. That message that the district could not withstand another deficit was reinforced several times during the year, Gay said.

At a budget workshop held Aug. 1, trustees got their first look at a draft of the budget with a deficit of $5.7 million — and no staff raises.

Both the deficit and the lack of a pay raise were unwelcome news for trustees.

“The board feels a high need to help teachers and other employees offset the effect of inflation,” Gay said.

Gay is a certified public accountant and works at a local bank. She said the information presented at that workshop was not in the same format as proposed budgets in previous years.

“It was kind of hard to see what is happening,” she said.

Gay and Haglund had an additional meeting with Torres to discuss “dissatisfaction with the fiscal management of the district," Gay said.

Torres also delivered a letter notifying the district of her intention to retire at the end of the school year.

The request for administrative leave and retirement allows Lufkin ISD to begin a superintendent search earlier than planned. Torres publicly announced her retirement plans in the spring but did not file the associated paperwork until Friday.

A special meeting has been called for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday — the time the district normally holds a workshop to discuss details of agenda items for the formal meeting held on the second Thursday of each month.

At the top of Tuesday’s agenda are two items to consider approval of: her leave request and letter of retirement.

Once those issues are decided, the board will discuss the superintendent search/selection process, according to an agenda posted Friday.

Trustees also will hear results of an investigation into issues surrounding Monday's convocation.

    In other business, trustees will:

    • Review budgets for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 fiscal years.

    • Hear administrative reports.

    • Receive reports on human resources and support services.

    • Discuss the timeline for teacher evaluations and appraisers.

    • Consider seeking a waiver from TEA related to staff development.

    • Discuss the staff development plan for 2023-24.

    • Review and discuss the memorandum of understanding between the Lufkin ISD Police Department and the Lufkin Police Department and a separate agreement between LISD police and the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office.

    • Discuss changes to the student code of conduct.

Following a closed executive session, the board will discuss legislative issues arising from HB 3 or other bills.

Look like the district was lacking in several areas.

I see Longview considering a new bond. And guess what..it includes possible updates to Lobo stadium too. Meanwhile we have done virtually nothing over the last several years. Just some minor touch ups here and there.

I’ve been trying to figure this out. I think his film looks a little similar to Adrian Peterson in high schools. It’s hard to find a running back with that kind of size and speed. He has to be one of the fastest kids in the country. The only back I’ve seen faster than him this year is Cade Durham. But Cade weighs 190 not 220

Sorry, I should've made clear which player.  Gavin the one I'm having a hard time figuring out.

Tried to watch a bit today. Too hot to sit there and burn up compressor on truck in this heat to watch long. Just say, there is a lot of positives to see. The majority of those kids are in great shape.  It's just such a talented district this year. We've been talking about Longview, Lancaster and Forney, Tyler High and North Mesquite are there too.  NM, Lancaster, Forney and Longview all have 6A numbers now, based on last 2022 realignment numbers. Depends on how much the ceiling increases.  Lufkin has great talent this year, real tough non district and district ahead. Survival of the fittest.

I think thats just the reality we are in now. It was like that in our old district. Lufkin will always be behind when it comes to numbers vs those schools in DWF and GHA.Not Those places are growing and nothing much here going on. We just have to buckle up and go knock the snot out of somebody. I think the current group should be fine for a few years talent wise. Will be interesting where go during realignment next year. I'm not gonna even try to guess. Never thought I would see the day we would be in a Dallas district.

There are over 1000 season tickets available, a few hundred did not renew this year. Not winning,  not making the playoffs two years in a row, poor playoff record all add up to decline in season ticket sales. I guess the administration didn't realize what happens when your biggest money making sport on campus stops making or getting playoff wins. This has been slowly happening the past 3 -4 years. Now, unless this group starts winning big, the stadium home games stands will be half full.

Football fans support spend their money on a winner, not the Mama's and Daddy's and grandparents that show up to watch their kid play, or march in the band, or high kick in the drill team. Those are the people buying season tickets, not so much the real football fans.

Just a sign of the times. Expectation have fallen so far for this program. Coaching staff went from talking about making runs at a state title, to winning a district championship, and now just trying to make the playoffs. This during an era of 4 teams getting in.

Just play football baby. There is just so much crap going around nowadays. I need some HS football, some concessions food and some bands playing.   I notice that the Lufkin Marching band learns the same JAM songs every year, I still like them, and I know there is a HUGE tradition for marching the band here in Lufkin, as it is in Longview.   I guess there are just so many marches written and music to perform to, and I know the Corps or Show bands are about 70% of the HS bands these days.  So, Lufkin and Longview are quite original, like the A&M band tradition, especially when they're traveling  to the metro areas. Hope the Lufkin Marching Band numbers are back up this year too, they sure took a hit during the COVID days, and it has taken a while to recover their numbers. Think they marched about 120 last year, maybe slightly fewer that that in 2021. I enjoy the band.

Well said PA..I forget how horrible I felt during Covid and just wanted some normalcy back. So I have to remember to appreciate everything we are able to enjoy. This is a favorite time of year for many of us. The season is quickly approaching and I want to savor everything you mention. I miss the long playoff runs and trips. A lot of great memories taking road trips with friends to big games. Nothing like packing some snacks and hitting the road for some football. And grabbing some good grub afterwards.

But open with the P C song??????   Who does that before teachers and students? The one we haven't spoken about is the performer being totally stupid enough to sing that song in a HS setting. He exhibited no common sense at all, and he should be penalized part of his fee for this improper action.

I don't think he opened with it. But I heard that he did acknowledge he could prob get in trouble for it and sang it anyway. He just changed the lyrics from P to Kitty. Which wasn't much better. Sure everyone knew the context of what was being said. Someone posted on FB that him and his band performed at the Pines Theater. And that the smaller crowd that payed to see him and the band enjoyed it. Much different than performing in front of a group of teachers. That need to get stuff ready for the first day of class. They also mentioned, he performed the same songs, just without the band. Will be interesting to see what comes of the investigation.

Who are the two Lufkin starters from last year now playing at Corrigan this year? One is said to be a LB and the other 6'5" 240lbs. lineman.  ?????

Over on Smoaky a CC fan has made that announcement.

I can't think of anyone thats 6'5 240lbs that started for us last year. Those numbers may be a little off, but I could be wrong. I'm sure we will hear something in the coming days. Won't be hard to notice a 6'5 240lb player missing from practice.

Former Lufkin football players Ja'Lynn Polk and Jerrin Thompson are a month away from electrifying crowds while performing on the national stage. On Saturday morning, they were simply a pair of college student-athletes giving back to their community.

Abe Martin coached in Lufkin for 7 years, from 1936 to 1942, his record here was 66-10 ( 4 district championships) and some even give him credit for Lufkin's State Championship appearance in 1943, even though Martin's assistant Buck Prejean coached the team after Martin suddenly departed the Summer of  1943 for Paschal HS in Ft Worth.  In 1944 he joined the TCU coaching staff. Abe Martin has not been in Lufkin for 79 years. There are very few folks alive today that witnessed Abe Martin coach in Lufkin, the kids that played for him would be in their late 90s now.  John Outlaw won the only State Championship for Lufkin in 2001. Maybe his name should be on the stadium and not the football field. He actually accomplished more with his time in Lufkin.

    https://www.tshof.org/store/p216/Othol_"Abe"_Martin.html

There's no Abe Martin family ties in Lufkin, he was never part of the established Lufkin families. Abe Martin was rewarded with a named stadium for a 66-10 record, a non participation State Title appearance, and becoming HC at TCU. ALL of those who made that naming decision back in 1972, are no longer alive today. My grandparents and Uncle thought highly of Abe Martin and his years here, he was a players coach just like John Outlaw. Many still think highly of John Outlaw today. It's definitely a generational thing separated by 68 years of the end of their respective coaching careers in Lufkin. There are no Outlaw family members from or in Lufkin today, so how is that considered?  IMO that's for others to figure out.

Thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression he won Lufkin's first state title. You make a good point about coach Outlaw. Of course many of use are still around that witnessed all the great things he done. Who knows how he will be viewed 60 years from now after many of us are gone. Thats if football is even still a sport.

Any updates on how his wife and son are doing?

So many HS either individually or by district are using 5 or 10 year stadium naming rights agreements or advertising sponsorships to stay ahead of the game. HEB just signed a contract with Allen ISD for $75K per year for advertising. Here is a list of sponsored HS stadiums in Texas.

    https://texasbob.com/stadium/naming_index.php

Lufkin could secure multiple corporate advertising sponsors, like the The Lufkin Sideliner Boosters did for the new scoreboard/screen bought for ABE in 2015, only on a much larger scale.  How about naming rights? There may be a few around here, not many, Joe Loving Auto Group, CHI St Luke's, Pilgrim's Pride, Polk Oil/ Brookshire Brothers, Lockheed Martin,  or Lufkin Coca Cola Stadium???? Then again, a combination of all of these together would provide a more substantial advertising sponsorship block, with less burden to the sponsor.  This can be done, the Lufkin Sideliners were successful by securing 5 year sponsorships with several business, some mentioned above, to pay for a new $450,000 scoreboard and Video screen at Abe Martin about 8 years ago. The district leaders commandeered the Sideliner Booster Club sponsors over 2 years ago, so they have the contacts to do something. Let's hope they do. ;)

This has been mentioned several times on here. It would help offset the price of several minor upgrades. I honestly think the powers that be are just satisfied with the status quo. It would take some initiative to put a plan in place for sponsorships. As a life long resident and supporter of local athletics and academics here. I was embarrassed to hear about the horrible conditions of the locker rooms. And the lack of restrooms for other hosted activities like tennis, before the new construction.

I know it's a long shot. But I'm even fine with selling the naming rights for a new stadium or completely remodeled one. I know there is a lot of nostalgia with the current name. And some wouldn't like the idea of it changing, but all things eventually come to an end. At some point, a group of people will come along and ask the question..why are we still calling it Abe? And thats not meant to be any disrespect toward what he accomplished here. But as for as I know, he doesn't have any family roots here. I have never heard of any of his family mentioning Lufkin or his time here. He went on to make a name for himself at the college level. I was actually surprised to find out he spent less than 10 years at Lufkin. I'm sure they could find others ways to honor him and that first state championship.

We are going to scrimmage Huntsville again this year on AUGUST 18TH, a time and place TBD. I think Huntsville is still working on their stadium at their HS. Huntsville ISD turned their practice field into a stadium and added all sports baseball, softball and soccer around it. Totally separating from the Sam Houston connection for so many years. They even have cover seating for the softball and baseball parks.

    https://www.kbtx.com/2023/07/14/huntsville-football-now-has-place-call-home-with-new-stadium/

Lufkin Abe Martin has some catching up to do, especially a field house and press box.

There's a man on the Texas High School Scoreboard FB page, releasing drone footage of all the stadiums in East Texas. He's done a great job capturing the footage. Lufkin is definitely behind most of our counterparts. Even the small school stadiums are much nicer.

You are correct, most Americans have no idea. This situation is like, what IF Russia just steps over the Bering Strait and takes Alaska in the same way they are trying to take Ukraine? Would you or Americans stand for it? No, Americans would not. Same thing in Ukraine. It a matter of perspective and what is closest to affected people.

Sorry to speak of it here, it's not Lufkin sports related at all. I've had a vested interest there, and have been a part of being able to see what the Wagner and Russian military really represent. They represent genocide of a people and culture. It's overwhelming beyond description for what they are attempting to do there, scorched Earth. No one, anywhere should ignore it.

If any of you think this should not be here, just say the word and I will remove everything to keep things under the LP Sports umbrella. Thanks

You good with me PA. It's something that's directly affecting you and your family.
