GAME PREVIEW  Jeff Fleener. Lettermen R/L: 35/29. Starters returning O/D: 5/8. 2022: 7-4 DI bi-district finalist/5-2 district. The Jackrabbits (4-0, 1-0) have started the 2023 season in big fashion with 4 dominating wins, 64-10 over Crandall, 62-0 over Frisco memorial, 53-0 over mesquite Poteet, and 69-0 over West Mesquite in their district opener.

Players to watch: DB Aaron Flowers (6-0, 188, 4.5), DL Tristan Bennett (6-0, 231, 4.8), RB Javian Osborne (5-10, 182, 4.4), WR Kofi Eduful (6-2, 178, 4.6), DL Luke Rodriguez (6-2, 272, 4.9). Top sophomore: LB Landry Hopkins (5-10, 212, 4.7). DB Josh Gatlin, DB Seth Hyder, WR Alijah Merkson, LB/DB Josh Anusiem, OL Matthew Diosdado, QB Kyle Crawford.

2023 notes: The Jackrabbits proved they weren’t a one-hit wonder a year ago, making it two in a row on postseason visits after a 15-year wait. Fleener says it’s now time to take the next step and win in the playoffs, and he has enough playmakers on offense and a potentially lethal defense to make it happen. Flowers (56 tackles, 2 INTs) has surpassed 30 college offers, and Bennett (9 sacks, 11 TFL) did his damage despite missing five games with injuries. Osborne (1,048 yards, 10 TDs rushing) and Merkson are burners, and Eduful (455 yards, 9 TDs receiving) simply finds ways to get into the end zone. Keep an eye on Hopkins (112 tackles, 5 TFL), who led the team in tackles as a freshman.

Lufkin Panthers - Coach: Todd Quick. Lettermen R/L: 24/26. Starters returning O/D: 5/5. 2022: 6-4/3-4 district. Lufkin (3-1, 0-1)  started the year with 3 straight wins over Tyler Legacy 31-7, Nacogdoches 48-28 and A&M Consolidated 24-17 before losing their district opener to Longview 42-0.

Players to watch: RB Kedren Young (5-11, 212, 4.5), DB Isaiah Menefee (6-2, 185, 4.5). Top juniors: LB Kaden Hooper (6-0, 1215), DL Zion Williams (6-4, 290, 5.1). RB Gavin Phillips.

Other key players: QB TJ Hammond, K Nolan Hansard, WR Kriesan Preston, WR Ke’Vondrick Taylor. WR Brayden Murphy, WR Keandre Hooper, OL Jordan Nochols,  DE Jordan McClendon. Soph QB Javion Johnson

2023 notes: Lufkin missing the playoffs didn’t happen for a stretch of 23 seasons from 1998-2020, but the postseason has come and gone minus the Panthers two years in a row. Expect that to change if RB Young (1,666 yards, 19 TDs rushing) continues to blossom into one of the state’s best. QB T.J. Hammond (1,464 yards, 13 TDs passing) has a year of experience under his belt, and the WR combo of Taylor (21-345, 3 TDs receiving) and Preston should help in his development. DB Menefee (67 tackles, 4 PBU, 2 INTs) turned in a solid season, and keep an eye on DL Williams (31 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 TFL), an imposing figure who saw plenty of action as a sophomore last season.

  • PackAttack changed the title to 2023 Lufkin Panthers (3-1, 0-1) VS Forney Jackrabbits (4-0, 1-0), Sept. 22nd, Abe Martin Stadium, 7:30 PM

May not be the best competition. But three shutouts and only given up 10 points for the year is impressive. No matter how you look at it.

If Lufkin gives up anything north of 50 points Friday, this season is over. Maybe not mathematically as for as playoff chances. But definitely for morale and confidence going forward.

Agree. Imo that’s the case if this game isn’t competitive at all. Lufkin has to show something Friday.
