2022 Results:  Lufkin 28 North Mesquite 14  (Lufkin and North Mesquite have met 2 times with Lufkin holding a 2-0 advantage through 2022)  Last Week, all teams in District 7-5A DI had an open week.

Game Preview: DCTF has Lufkin favored by +16

North Mesquite:  Coach: Tim Seder. Lettermen R/L: 10/22. Starters returning O/D: 2/3. 2022: 2-8/1-6 district.

Players to watch: QB Luke Seder (6-0, 185, 4.6), DL Leander Parrish (6-2, 195, 4.8), LB Kamajay Else (5-8, 185, 4.8). Top juniors: OL Marcus Barber (5-8, 230, 5.1), DL/OL Callen Greene (5-10, 260, 5.6). WR/DB Jaquaylon Caraway, LB Javon Greer, OL Dontavius Evans.

2023 notes: The Stallions dropped down in classification a year ago, but managed just one more win than the previous season. Size and numbers will continue to hamper the team this season, but a good place to start any turnaround is at QB and they have a potential star in veteran Seder (2,478 yards, 17 TDs passing; 212 yards, 3 TDs rushing). Look for more production from WR Carraway (18-181 yards, 1 TD). A defense that allowed 32 points per outing last year must improve, and should with the return of DL Parrish (45 tackles, 8 TFL, 3 sacks) and LB Else (77 tackles, 10 TFL, 2 sacks). Look for Green to see playing time up front on both sides of the ball.

Lufkin Panthers Coach: Todd Quick. Lettermen R/L: 24/26. Starters returning O/D: 5/5. 2022: 6-4/3-4 district.

Players to watch: RB Kedren Young (5-11, 212, 4.5), DB Isaiah Menefee (6-2, 185, 4.5). Top juniors: LB Kaden Hooper (6-0, 1215), DL Zion Williams (6-4, 290, 5.1). RB Gavin Phillips.

Other key players: QB TJ Hammond, K Nolan Hansard, WR Kriesan Preston, WR Ke’Vondrick Taylor. WR Brayden Murphy, WR Keandre Hooper, OL Jordan Nochols,  DE Jordan McClendon. Soph QB Javion Johnson

2023 notes: Lufkin missing the playoffs didn’t happen for a stretch of 23 seasons from 1998-2020, but the postseason has come and gone minus the Panthers two years in a row. Expect that to change if RB Young (1,666 yards, 19 TDs rushing) continues to blossom into one of the state’s best. QB T.J. Hammond (1,464 yards, 13 TDs passing) has a year of experience under his belt, and the WR combo of Taylor (21-345, 3 TDs receiving) and Preston should help in his development. DB Menefee (67 tackles, 4 PBU, 2 INTs) turned in a solid season, and keep an eye on DL Williams (31 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 TFL), an imposing figure who saw plenty of action as a sophomore last season.
