GAME PREVIEW :  A&M Consolidated - Brandon Schmidt. Lettermen R/L: 13/24. Starters returning O/D: 5/5. 2022: 9-3 5A DI area finalist/6-1 district. A&M Consolidated has started the season 2-0, a 23-12 win over Huntsville and 38-8 against Monterrey, Mexico.

Players to watch: DB Trace Meadows (6-1, 190, 4.5), RB Keshun Thomas (5-10, 170, 4.5), RB Rodrick Taylor (5-10, 190, 4.5), QB Will Hargett (5-11, 170, 4.4), DB Desmond Darnell (5-9, 180, 4.6), WR Payton Bjork (5-9, 170, 4.5). Top juniors: RB/WR Cameron Vines (5-10, 175, 4.6), WR/K Colton Chmelar (6-3, 180, 4.7). Top sophomore: WR Darius Roberts (6-1, 175, 4.6).

2023 notes: Coach Schmidt takes over a program rich in tradition and deep in skill talent that will once again key the Tigers’ success. If the Tigers can reload along the offensive front, the combination of speedy RBs Thomas (830 yards, 17 TDs rushing) and Taylor (765 yards, 10 TDs rushing), QB Hargett (2,151 yards, 17 TDs passing) and WR Bjork (630 yards receiving) will make opponents defend the whole field. DBs Meadows (65 tackles) and Darnell (50 tackles, 3 INTs) lead a defense that will also lean on experienced players up front in DLs Foketi and Lynch, LBs Clark and Hamm and DBs Ratcliff and Bellard. Sophomores Roberts and Walton could also become impact players early on as the Tigers build for another playoff push.

2023 notes: Lufkin missing the playoffs didn’t happen for a stretch of 23 seasons from 1998-2020, but the postseason has come and gone minus the Panthers two years in a row. Expect that to change if RB Young (1,666 yards, 19 TDs rushing) continues to blossom into one of the state’s best. QB T.J. Hammond (1,464 yards, 13 TDs passing) has a year of experience under his belt, and the WR combo of Taylor (21-345, 3 TDs receiving) and Preston should help in his development. DB Menefee (67 tackles, 4 PBU, 2 INTs) turned in a solid season, and keep an eye on DL Williams (31 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 TFL), an imposing figure who saw plenty of action as a sophomore last season.
