  1. My grandpa seems to think it is Dunbar. What makes me think that it is if you look at the Dangerfield helmet you can almost tell that it it seems to have that trademark D on the helmet just from the portion that you can see. It did pop up when I googled Lufkin Dunbar. I wish Abe Martin Stadium would add the Dunbar championship banners somewhere on the facility. It is still a part of Lufkin football history.

That is an awesome idea...that will never, ever happen in a million years. I attended Lufkin Intermediate on the Dunbar campus in '79-'80 and don't think the history of the campus or it's origin was ever mentioned. I know that after that it was renamed Lufkin Dunbar Intermediate (I believe)or maybe Dunbar Intermediate. I think the chances on that happening are slim to none but I was being serious when I said it was an awesome idea.

  2. I did not become a Sideliner until 1995, but I was told Culpepper did not want to deal with talking to or supporting a football booster group, Kind of surprising since he came from UT. This was the story told me by the ones who brought back the organization in 1995. I did not know Culpepper well.

There's a book written by an ex-UT player "Meat on the Hoof" and he speaks of a crazy grad assistant working with the football program-Pat Culpepper

  3. Not trying to start an arguement but how do you know that Coach Outlaw  had a bigger impact then Martin ... Like ive said I have no idea why it was named Abe Martin but I believe he must have done some pretty special things to have the stadium named after him

No way to really quantify "impact" but Coach Outlaw was in Lufkin 17 years as compared to 7 seasons for Abe Martin. The town and school are much bigger now (and integrated) so I imagine Coach Outlaw probably came in daily contact with more students. I was always under the assumption that the stadium was named for Martin because of the things he accomplished later in life. But you know what happens when you assume.

  4. Saw this on Wikipedia

    Notable alumni

Bradford, Amy - Softball pitcher for the University of Texas

Bradford, Brad - Punter for the University of Texas

Hadnot, Rex - Left Guard for the Miami Dolphins

Kiel, Terrance - Safety for Texas A&M university and San Diego chargers

McNeal, Reginal - Quarterback for Texas A&M then WR for the Cincinnati Bengals(released)

Mullbach, Don - Center for the Detroit lions

    EDIT

    Now is this for real?

Somebody's pulling your leg! Mulbach's actually the long snapper for the Lions.
