Lufkin and Nacogdoches will square off for their 105th meeting with Lufkin leading the series 75-23-6 . Lufkin has won the last 8 meetings since 2015.  Lufkin won last year in Nacogdoches 47-28.  In 2024 Lufkin remains 5A DI playing in Region III District 9-5A DI, while Nacogdoches plays in District 7-5A DII Region II.  Lufkin lost 7-3 at home to Longview, while Nacogdoches won at home 34-17 over Palestine.

2024 notes:  DL Williams (37 tackles, 5 TFL, 3 sacks) and DT Alexander (29 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack) will be a handful for any offensive line to handle and that should free up hard-hitting LB Hooper (106 tackles) to use his athleticism to make plays. WR Preston (28-515, 7 TDs receiving) is the lone skill player on the offensive side of the ball with significant experience returning. Another concern for the offense is youth along the offensive line. Quick believes that if his young offense can mature, there’s a good chance that his team can contend for a district title.

2024 Nacogdoches Dragons - 

Coach: Darby House. Lettermen R/L: 23/22. Starters returning O/D: 5/4. 2023: 3-7/1-5 district. Key losses: Andrew Rogers (Southern Arkansas), Braxton Jones (Southern Arkansas), Jaylen Brown (Michigan State), Mikail Lockett (Mary Hardin-Baylor).

Players to watch: QB Tyren Mathews, DL Atlantis Sessions, OL Joshua Knepp, WR Micah Lockett, DB Quin’Charves Calhoun, LB Landon Sherrard. Top juniors: DL Joel Jones, RB Trae Page. Top sophomore: WR R.J. Whitaker.

2024 notes: The Dragons struggled a year ago, but those struggles – and the players who survived them – should be strengths in 2024 in a second year in the system under House. Mathews (777 total yards, 5 TDs; 51 tackles) is a versatile, two-way athlete who also blocked two FGs a year ago and is ready to explode in 2024 as he takes over under center to direct the team’s spread offensive attack. House says the Dragons are stronger up front this season, and that starts with Knepp on offense and Sessions (30 tackles, 3.5 sacks) and Jones on the defensive side. Youth is still an issue, but if some young players step up, the Dragons could return to the playoffs.
