Players to watch: DE Travis Jackson (6-4, 240, 4.7), QB Luke Wolf (6-4, 195, 4.5), LB Brooks Gallagher (6-0, 215, 4.7), DB Matthew Ross (6-0, 175, 4.5), DB Makel Sears (5-10, 170, 4.5), WR Jadin Hambrick (6-5, 210, 4.7). Top juniors: LB Paul Ratliff (6-1, 195, 4.6), RB Micah Pierson (5-10, 190, 4.6). Top sophomore: DB Ethan Brown (6-0, 185, 4.6).

2023 notes: New head coach Beau Trahan comes to East Texas after a stint in the college ranks where he was on staff at Tulsa. QB Wolf (1,122 yards, 6 TDs passing; 717 yards, 5 TDs rushing) is a true dual threat and will lead the Legacy offense. WR Hambrick will be his top target, while junior RB Pierson (118 yards, 1 TD rushing) may get a chance to take over as the featured back. DE Jackson (63 tackles, 15 TFL, 8 sacks) is an explosive pass rusher off the edge and must be accounted for at all times by the opposing defense. LB Gallagher (117 tackles, 15 TFL, 4 sacks) was third-team all-state. He returns, along with DBs Ross (48 tackles, 2 INTs) and Sears (38 tackles, 3 INTs).

Players to watch: RB Kedren Young (5-11, 212, 4.5), DB Isaiah Menefee (6-2, 185, 4.5). Top juniors: LB Kaden Hooper (6-0, 1215), DL Zion Williams (6-4, 290, 5.1).

Other prospects: K Nolan Hansard, WR Kriesan Preston, WR Ke’Vondrick Taylor.

2023 notes: Lufkin missing the playoffs didn’t happen for a stretch of 23 seasons from 1998-2020, but the postseason has come and gone minus the Panthers two years in a row. Expect that to change if RB Young (1,666 yards, 19 TDs rushing) continues to blossom into one of the state’s best. QB T.J. Hammond (1,464 yards, 13 TDs passing) has a year of experience under his belt, and the WR combo of Taylor (21-345, 3 TDs receiving) and Preston should help in his development. DB Menefee (67 tackles, 4 PBU, 2 INTs) turned in a solid season, and keep an eye on DL Williams (31 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 TFL), an imposing figure who saw plenty of action as a sophomore last season.
