2023 Lufkin Panthers BASEBALL

GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENT:
Graduation is a time of celebration for all of our Class of 2023 students. This year, we are deeply saddened by the loss of Lance Modisette. There has been much speculation about how graduation would be handled this year, with the intent on celebrating and honoring all our students. We want to show respect and support to the Lance Modisette family as well as recognize this monumental accomplishment for our seniors. In doing that, students may wear a provided ribbon commemorating their classmate, a chair will be left unattended among the students and Lance’s name will be called alphabetically under the magna cum laude honor graduates. We invite all family and friends to attend the graduation that is scheduled for Friday, May 26 at 8 p.m. at Abe Martin Stadium.

Lufkin Panther Sports supports graduation acknowledgement on stage Friday night for Lance Modisette. There are thoughts being circulated that LISD would not be allowing this to happen. We hope this information is incorrect and Lance will be included with his Classmates of 2023.

At first they were not going to say his name at graduation. I have plenty of details I will share regarding that once we bury the young man.

Often you only hear about negative stuff. I want to give Coach Cobb his due. Cobb has been a rock for these players and loved ones during this tragic time. He has stepped up and been a true leader. Words cannot express what all he has done for the Modisette family. He is no doubt the leader our kids need regarding our baseball program. I hope he stays for many years. Again, words can't explain the leader he has become. Lp

So he is staying on as coach in Lufkin?  Just curious, there has been much in the wind about that situation.

I think this experience has created a bond between coach and his players. I would love to see him stay Only time will tell....

The Lufkin Panthers put together a strong season that ended up with a district runner-up finish in 16-5A and a spot in the bi-district playoffs.

Four of those players were honored on the first-team all-district squad, which was recently announced.

Seniors Mark Requena, Charlie Deaton and Chip Buchanan were joined on the first-team squad by junior Jadon Grigson.

Requena, Deaton and Buchanan were each multi-year contributors for the Panthers, including playing key roles in Lufkin’s run to the regional semifinals in 2022.

Requena earned his honor both for his bat as well as his slick glove play at first basBuchanan, who was an everyday starter for the Panthers while playing a variety of positions, earned his honor in the outfield.

Deaton, who also saw time at catcher and third base, was the first-team designated hitter.

Meanwhile, Grigson, a junior in his second season as a starter behind the dish, earned his selection at catcher.

Junior Kaleb Hillis, who became one of Lufkin’s most reliable starting pitchers, was one of two Lufkin players who received second-team honors.

He was joined by Cooper Knight, a junior shortstop and leadoff hitter who finished his second season in Lufkin’s starting lineup.

In addition to those selections, Kolby Kovar, a starting pitcher and outfielder, was Lufkin’s lone honorable-mention selection.

The district’s superlative honors went to MVP Zane Adams (New Caney Porter), Offensive Player of the Year Marshall Burke (Kingwood Park), Defensive Player of the Year Victor Fortuna (New Caney Porter), Newcomer of the Year Gage Dorris (Huntsville), Co-Freshman of the Year Sebastian Avila (Dayton) and Noah Nieto (Huntsville) and Coach of the Year Wayne Ralph (New Caney Porter).

one year of Elite Baseball then back to mediocrity...

oh well... but wait till next season...

There were lots of expectations for that Thundering13 group. It sort of panned out in 2022, but somehow the Seniors from that group who returned in 2023 did not get the same results. Ditsworth was the biggest difference maker from that whole group.

Several question abound about LP baseball next season. Does Cobb go or stay? First, he was going. Now, it looks like he is staying. Next, what is coming up behind the exodus of all of the Thundering13 group.  Some say the best is yet to come, others say not. Who to believe? I don't know and really don't care at this point. So much seems to be unclear in Lufkin HS sports. Frankly, until I see football winning again I trust nothing. If football doesn't happen the next two or three years, I'm done and walking away from anything Lufkin does until they get the right people there to right the ship. Boys Basketball is by far the premier sports on the Lufkin campus right now.

I have not forgotten about Sam Flores at all, probably the best player on the 2022 team. My comparison was in regard to the Thundering 13 group, which Sam was not a part.

The high expectations in 2023 by fans was because there was still 6 or 7 of the Thundering 13 still playing in 2023. Other baseball fans say 2023 was expected to be just as it turned out because Lufkin didn't have the seasoned pitching or big bats like they had in 2022.

Cobb will and should stay. He showed me the man he is by the way he handled the loss of a player. He was there for the kids, both former and current during the whole situation. He went above and beyond being a rock for them all.

Next season should be much better. We have our best pitcher from last season returning along with starters from 2b, ss, c, cf, and lf.

Sam did his part for sure. I hated it when he lost his position to a sophomore due to injury. Just glad his bat was able to stay in the lineup. People often forget about the season Hinojosa (district mvp) had. Also, Del Toro let nothing get by him at 2nd base.

Shoutout to our Lufkin baseball all star teams as they are absolutely thrashing everybody in sight! My son was on the 7U and from that age group all the way to the majors at 12U we have plenty of talent. Not a single age group lost anything.

those boys from the '22 season were mostly from the 2018 team that also won a LL National Championship... Sam Flores, Bebo Hinojosa, Ricky Rodriquez, Gavin Deltoro, Cameron Jackson, Chip Buchannon, Hunter Ditsworth, Christian Mumphreys, Charlie Deaton, Mark Requena, Kolby Kovar....
