Diboll was 31-11 last year. Lost in 2nd round. Guess they will need to make an announcement soon for someone, the season is almost here. He will be the next volleyball coach at Lufkin. Also, Diboll lost head baseball coach VJ Bunner, he’s headed to Tyler Legacy for take over their baseball program. PackAttack Posted August 21, 2023 Author Report Share Posted August 21, 2023 The Lufkin Lady Panthers closed the second day of their tournament in strong fashion as they trailed only once in rolling to a 2-0 win over the Huntington Devilettes at the Panther Activity Center Friday afternoon. Lufkin led from wire to wire to take the opening set 25-14 before answering with 11 consecutive points before holding off a Huntington rally to take a 25-19 decision in the second set. Akira Smallwood got Lufkin off to a solid shot as she had a spike and a block early in the first set for a 5-3 advantage. Za’Niya Johnson’s shot started a run of four consecutive points. Ashbee Dean put in a point and Cam McCullough’s spike made it 15-8. Braylee Whitley halted the run with a nice shot before Laine King and Jolie Evett hit a finesse shot that cut the margin to 17-11. Smallwood responded with a pair of spikes and a nice serve that helped Lufkin pull into a 23-13 lead. Aaliyah Maxey had a shot that led to a Lufkin point before Jazlynn O’Neal’s spike sealed the first set for the Lady Pack. The Devilettes picked up their only lead of the match when Tori Terry had a perfectly placed volley that gave them a 2-1 advantage. However, the Lady Panthers responded with 11 consecutive points, 10 of those coming off the serve of Ava Mendez. Smallwood and Dean dominated at the net as the Lady Pack saw a slim deficit turn into a 13-2 lead. Laine King ended the Lufkin run with a nice shot, Maddison Bradberry scored on a serve that couldn’t be returned and Whitten finished off a point that trimmed the margin to 17-9. The Devilettes continued to chip away at that margin with a Whittley ace and a points off a pair of Savannah Mitchell serves helping to cut the margin to 21-15. Huntington cut the deficit to 24-19 before an error gave the Lady Panthers the final point and the win. Earlier in the day, Lufkin took a straight-set win over Houston Bellaire. However, it couldn’t find any answers against a tough Spring Hill Lady Panthers’ squad in a 2-0 loss. Lufkin was outscored 25-13 in each set. Spring Hill raced out to a 6-1 early lead before Maxey and Johnson delivered back-to-back points that made it 7-4. After Spring Hill extended its margin, Lufkin got back in it with blocks from McCullough and Smallwood that made it 13-9. Lufkin never got closer in the set as Spring Hill scored 12 of the last 16 points in closing it out. The second set was another uphill climb for Lufkin after Spring Hill scored the first 10 points. Lufkin ended the momentum with three straight points and later pulled within 14-9 after Smallwood had a pair of spikes and a point off her serve. Lufkin was within striking distance, trailing 17-12, before Spring Hill scored eight of the last nine points to close things out. Bracket play at the Lufkin tournament will start this morning. PackAttack Posted August 25, 2023 Author Report Share Posted August 25, 2023 The Lufkin Lady Panthers capped another strong weekend with a third-place finish at their own tournament over the weekend. Lufkin’s 4-2 record in pool play qualified Lufkin to compete in Saturday’s gold bracket. The Lady Panthers played some of their best volleyball of the season Saturday. Lufkin advanced to the semifinals with a hard-fought three-set win over Nederland. Akira Smallwood led the way for the Lady Pack with 12 kills and 11 digs while Chesney McCullough had six kills, two blocks and three aces. Senior Libero Charlotte Deason pitched in with 13 digs and Jailyn Flores and Za’Nyia Johnson added 12 and nine points respectively. Lufkin ran into eventual tournament champion Spring Hill in the semifinals, losing in two tough sets. McCullough and Smallwood teamed up for 14 kills while Flores led the team with nine assists. In the final game, Lufkin dismantled a Madisonville team that had been slowed by injury. McCullough and Smallwood led the way once again with 16 kills while Deaton and Ava Mendez led the defense with 18 digs. Sophomores Smallwood and McCullough were each all-tournament selections for the Lady Panthers. “I’m really impressed with our girls,” Lufkin head coach Jeremy Stewart said. “We have so many young players with little to no varsity experience, but they are meeting the challenges head on, and our older players are stepping into leadership roles as they go. “It’s been a fantastic start to the season, and I’m very happy with our progress. It’s going to be a great year.” Lufkin (12-7) will head to the Metroplex this weekend to compete in the Forney High School tournament before hosting Tyler Legacy Tuesday night. In addition to the varsity finish, Lufkin’s gold team won the freshman tournament championship while the purple team was runner-up in the JV division. PackAttack Posted August 31, 2023 Author Report Share Posted August 31, 2023 I'm not keeping up with Volleyball very well. They did beat Tyler Legacy last Tuesday to move to 18-10 on the year. District is about to start so I believe they are in the hunt for a district title this year. My focus is mainly on football, boys basketball and boys baseball, maybe a little track these days. I will need some help to follow up with steady news from the other sports. I will try to do better and for sure will keep the coverage going if playoffs are involved.
