Girls basketball has sucked for a long time lol.. They need a coach. Not a friend.

Girls BB at Lufkin has seemed to be heading in the opposite direction of the boys program. Maybe the sub Varsities are bringing some better talent.

They don’t have any discipline or structure within that program. They need a new varsity coach.

Coaching and being friends too does not produce, look at any winning program out there.  There is a level of fear to play for a really good coach because they expect production and discipline.  I'm thinking UConn, South Carolina  and LSU.  No friends and family with those winning programs.

After opening district play on Nov. 19 in Jacksonville, the Lufkin Lady Panthers will get back to 10-5A play on Tuesday when they host Whitehouse.

The Panthers lost that opener to Jacksonville and are 2-4 on the season with wins over LaMarque and Hudson.

“It’s been a bit of a struggle so far, trying to put four quarters together,” Lufkin head girls’ basketball coach SaDale Lamb said earlier this week. “Every game we’ve played in, when we’ve had all our girls, we’ve been in the game for either the first half or first three quarters. Then we’ve just kind of mentally collapsed and that’s something we’ve got to figure out.”

The Lady Panthers started the season short five players that were still in the volleyball playoffs, including two starters.

“That’s been a challenge for us. Most of the teams in the district aren’t relying on girls from volleyball, “ Lamb said. “It’s been tough trying to get meshed together. With this nine-team district we start super early. It usually takes us a while to get it down and get back on the same page coming from volleyball, but we’re not afforded that luxury right now. We’re just trying to expedite it and get on the same page.”

In the district opener, the Lady Panthers led 14-12 early in the second period, but Jacksonville went on a 17-0 run to lead by 15 at halftime and went on to take a 72-33 win.

The Lady Panthers got their first home game of the season Tuesday night in the Pineywoods Hoopfest and took a 46-26 win over Hudson.

With realignment, the Lady Panthers are in District 10-5A, with only Nacogdoches remaining as a district opponent. Other teams in the district are Tyler, Mt. Pleasant, Texas High, Whitehouse, Hallsville, Marshall and Jacksonville.

“It’s tough competition in this district, Jacksonville obviously, and we’ve got to get that game back when they come here,” Lamb said. “Tyler will be tough again, after they put us out in the playoffs last season. Nacogdoches will be tough, they’re scrappy and they got us twice last year. We’re going to have to bring our game and we’re going to have to come ready to play four quarters.”

Despite the tough start, Lamb said there’s some positives early on.

“They’re working on fixing things and willing to work, and they’re coachable,” Lamb said. “It’s just those moments where we turn it over back-to-back and the game gets out of control. We’ve got to understand to be more patient, not to rush when we get down and just grow and mature in that aspect.”

The Lady Panthers get Whitehouse on Tuesday, then play in the Hudson tournament Dec. 5-7.

Lufkin will play Livingston at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Hornet Gym and China Spring at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the Hudson Gym.

The Lady Panthers will return to district play at Nacogdoches on Dec. 10.

Well, as you see above Lady basketball was without 5 players who had been playing Volleyball.  Makes a huge difference is team depth and especially since two of them were starters.   I think the girls will compete well in the 10-5A district, Whitehouse (5-1) will be a big test this Tuesday.
