Down three starters and taking on the second-place team in the district, the Lufkin Lady Panthers knew it would take an all-out effort to stay unbeaten in district.

Thanks to a gritty performance and a late Rachel Bonnin goal, the Lady Panthers closed out the first half of district with a key 2-1 victory over the Jacksonville Fightin’ Maidens in Lufkin Friday.

Lufkin (8-6-2 on the season , 6-0-1 in district) will host John Tyler on Tuesday night.

Whitehouse TIED JT 1-1
Nacogdoches Pine Tree 4-1
Marshall/Hallsville

This is turning out to be a fantastic race.  Lufkin, who hadn't lost a game all season just a little over a week ago now finds themselves in fourth place and in a battle for the final playoff slot with their rivals from Nacogdoches.  Whitehouse fell from first place to third place thanks to their tie with JT.  Jacksonville's win over LP put the Indians all alone in first place.  JT is lurking at #2 and WH isn't out of title contention either.  It appears to be a five team race for the top 4 slots.

Get some popcorn ready...this could be a fun race down the st

It was a tough night for the Lufkin soccer teams as they each fell in one-goal decisions to John Tyler.

In action in Lufkin, the Lady Panthers dropped a 1-0 decision to the Lady Lions. John Tyler beat the buzzer at the end of the first half as it scored with 16 seconds remaining.

Lufkin holds on to first place in the district race with six games remaining despite the loss.

The Lady Panthers will look to get back on track at 6 p.m. Friday as they travel to take on the Marshall Lady Mavericks.

In boys’ action Tuesday night, the John Tyler Lions were also able to avenge an earlier loss to Lufkin as they took a 2-1 victory in Tyler.

Adan Hernandez had the lone goal for the Panthers.

The Panthers opened district with a dominating 4-0 win against John Tyler earlier this season.

With the loss, Lufkin has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The Panthers will aim to get back on track at 6 p.m. Friday when they host the Marshall Mavericks.

Lufkin  7  Marshall  0  - Back-to-back road losses left the Lufkin Panthers ready to take out some aggression in front of the home crowd. Unfortunately for Marshall, the overmatched Mavericks were the team in the way.

Lufkin boys put on a clinic in the first 15 minutes in building a 4-0 lead then coasted from there on its way to a 7-0 win in District 16-5A action at Jase Magers Soccer Field.

Jaime Acevedo put two on the board for Lufkin and Luis Flores and Eric Aguilar added goals for the Panthers.

Lufkin girls 8, Marshall 0 — In Marshall, it was another night of domination for the Lady Pack as they rolled to an 8-0 win over the Lady Mavericks.

Freshman Rachel Bonnin had a spectacular night as she finished with four goals.

Idalia Hernandez added a pair of goals for the Lady Panthers, and Milagros Guzman and Natalie Madrigal had a goal each.

Lufkin will return to action on Tuesday night when it plays at Nacogdoches.

Game 12
NO TUESDAY GAMES- SPRING BREAK
Games will resume on Friday night.

Standings
John Tyler (9-1-1) , (15-7-1)
Jacksonville (9-2) , (17-5-1)
Whitehouse (8-1-2) , (16-2-3)
Lufkin (7-3-1) ,  (12-3-4)
Nacogdoches (4-5-2), (15-8-4)
Pine Tree (2-9), (4-11-5)
Hallsville (1-9-1) , (5-11-1)
Marshall (0-10-1) , (1-14)

It appears the four playoff teams have been set with JT, Jax, WH, and Lufkin.  Nac still has a mathematical chance.... but it's a slim one.  They would need to win out...and Lufkin to lose out.  The finish to the district title could be a great one.  JT has the upper hand with the sweep of Jacksonville.  But WH's tie with JT and the season finale Vs. the Lions could make things interesting for all three.  LP seems settled in the #4 spot...but their pedigree demands attention in the finals days of the race.

Game 12
NO TUESDAY GAMES- SPRING BREAK
Games resume on Friday

Standings
Lufkin (8-1-2) , (10-7-3)
Whitehouse (7-2-2), (8-8-2)
Jacksonville (6-3-2) , (12-7-3)
Pine Tree (6-5) , (9-8-1)
John Tyler (6-5), (7-10-2)
Hallsville (5-4-2), (9-6-4)

Nacogdoches (1-10) ,  (4-10-1)
Marshall (0-11) ,  (5-12)

Friday's Lufkin Vs. Whitehouse game is huge.  A WH win would create a tie for first place with two games remaining.  An LP win would all but give the title to Lufkin.  Jacksonville could creep up on WH with a win coupled with a WH loss.  Pine Tree and JT are knotted up for the final playoff spot and Hallsville is lurking just behind them.  Shaping up for a great race to the end.

With competitions already being suspended until March 29, the University Interscholastic League added to its mandates on Monday afternoon by suspending any practices and workouts conducted outside of the normal school day.

That suspension of activities is also set to go through March 29. At that time, the UIL will reassess the situation.

During that time, schools may not practice and students are not allowed to use the school’s facilities or equipment.

All athletic facilities are to be closed for both school and non-school functions.

The mandate also applies to spring football. In addition, the statement said if spring football is eventually canceled, all schools would be eligible to begin summer practices on Aug. 3 while adding an extra scrimmage.

Soccer has released an updated potential playoff schedule, which would start on April 13 and run through the state championships from April 29 through May 2.

Other sports are using the original playoff schedule with the exception of track and field, which could combine district and area meets in order to meet the deadline.

Schools would still need to readjust their regular season schedules in order to determine district qualifiers for the playoffs. Restrictions on usual weekday game limits would be taken away.

The UIL also announced that it would make any updates in the upcoming weeks.

Saturday was the final day of UIL competition before the suspension went into effect on Monday.
