16-5A Boys Basketball

GAME 12
Marshall beat Hallsville 53-47
Nacogdoches beat Whitehouse 46-34
Lufkin beat John Tyler 75-61
Pine Tree beat Jacksonville 58-50

No surprises on Tuesday night as Marshall and Nac both won their games to set up a district title showdown Friday night at Maverick Gymnasium.  The winner will take sole possession of first place with only one game remaining in district play.  The loser will settle in to second place.  Nac won the first game between the two at Dragon Gym.  Nac's lone district loss came at the hands of Lufkin.  LP has firm control of the #3 slot, while JT and WH are battling it out for the fourth and final playoff slot.... they will face off in the regular season finale on Tuesday in a huge battle. WH won the first game.  Hallsville and PT are on the outside looking in...and would need miracles to sneak into the playoffs.  Each would need to win Friday and Tuesday for the chance of a tie next Tuesday.  Jacksonville has been eliminated.

Standings
Nacogdoches (11-1) , (26-8 )
Marshall (11-1) , (22-8)
Lufkin (8-4), (19-9)
John Tyler (5-7) , (7-16)
Whitehouse (5-7) , (11-15)
Hallsville (4-8) , (16-17)
Pine Tree (4-8), (15-17)
Jacksonville (0-12) , (4-16)

16-5A Boys Basketball

GAME 13
Marshall beat Nacogdoches 69-65
Lufkin beat Hallsville 56-49
Pine Tree beat Whitehouse 47-44
Jacksonville beat John Tyler 76-72

A HUGE night came down the track for the playoffs Friday.  Marshall avenged their 2 point loss to Nacogdoches earlier in district play with a THRILLING 4 point win on their home court.  The win clinched no less than a tie for the district championship for Marshall.  It marks the Mavs'' fourth district title in the last 10 seasons.  Jacksonville got the UPSET OF THE SEASON with their stunning win over John Tyler.  It was the Indian's first win district victory of the season, but more importantly it dropped JT from being in SOLE possession of the fourth and final playoff spot to a three way tie for the spot with Whitehouse and Pine Tree.  The Pirates scored a minor upset with their win over WH in ensure the three way tie headed into the regular season finale on Tuesday.  Lufkin is in sole possession of third place.

John Tyler and WH will tangle in a critical game on Tuesday, while PT is headed to Nac.  Barring a monumental upset by PT over Nac.... the winner of the JT/WH game will clinch the final playoff spot.

Standings
Marshall (12-1), (23-8)
Nacogdoches (11-2) , (26-9 )
Lufkin (9-4), (21-9)
John Tyler (5-8) , (7-17)
Whitehouse (5-8) , (11-16)
Pine Tree (5-8), (16-17)
Hallsville (4-9) , (16-18)
Jacksonville (1-12) , (5-16)

Sulphur Springs 33 Lufkin 21 at the HALF.    Lufkin needs to block out for rebounds. I mean if I am guarding a 6'7" and 6'8" guy and my only  post are 6'3" - 6'4" like the Pack big men, you better block out or you are not getting the rebound.  Lufkin is being dominated on the boards   SS is a better coached team in this 1st half.

Panther playoff success is not good in any of our sports right now.  More on this a little later.

Not surprised with the basketball results. Neither of our teams were very good this season. Average at best. Baseball is the one thing we’ve been pretty consistent at the last few years and it only looks better in the coming years.

Lufkin has some pretty good talent and height with their JV and Freshman bunch.  So maybe there is hope for the future.   Some of the under classman on the bench were better than a couple seniors playing.  Panther boys basketball should be good the next couple of years.

State Basketball Region II Boys Playoffs:

Sulphur Springs loses to Lancaster 44 to 38

Mount Pleasant beat Kaufman 56-53 in OT.

Both winners are headed to the 5A Regional Finals. MP Tigers are carrying the East Texas flag alone now for 5A (and 6A for that matter).
