The Lufkin Panthers got a very early indication that Friday wasn’t going to be their night.

Lufkin scored its first bucket of the game 1:15 into the first quarter, then went blank for the next nine minutes. The sluggish opening combined with a tough Nacogdoches defense led to a 70-47 Panther loss in the district opener in Nacogdoches.

Following the quick 2-0 lead, the Pack never led again in the contest, despite closing to within seven points at 29-22 in the early moments of the third quarter.

But the Dragons were able to shut down the interior, thanks to big man  6'9" Nana Antwi Basiako, who finished the game with six blocks, including stuffs on consecutive Lufkin possessions in the fourth period.

The Panthers managed to convert seven 3-pointers in the game, but those weren’t enough to balance the lack of production inside. Jackson Parks led the Pack with 14 points, including a trio of threes. Jonathan Moore finished with 11 points.

The Dragons’ Basiako led all scorers with 20 points. Deonte Jackson added 19 points and A.J. Johnson 11 in the win.

Lufkin loses 86-85 up in Marshall, after leading much of the 2nd half. Home cooking can come in handy. Mavericks hit a half court bank shot with no time left to win.   Lufkin goes up 85-83 on a lay up with .5 seconds left.  Referees confer, Marshall coach said he called a TO and they put 3 seconds back on the clock.  When Wortham scored the clock said  0.5.   The score keeper even had an accidental buzzer in the 4th just as a Lufkin 3 pointer was going through the net.  . Whoops my mistake.  They gave Lufkin 5 seconds to replayed the procession.   Lufkin had the lead much of the 2nd half but it just felt like it was uphill most of 4th quarter.    Clock operator took a bow to the Marshall home crowd when the game was over.  You can't make this stuff up.  It was funny.   Marshall threw a couple elbows that could have injured, no calls on them.  Jordan Moore took one to the jaw, went to the floor and he was called with the foul. When he asked about getting hit in the jaw, they called a Tech on him.    Panthers played well in the environment they were given to play.  It is what it is when you play on the road, just like when teams come to play in Lufkin.  Can not wait until Marshall come to Lufkin at the end of district.  That will be another rough game.

Lufkin Boys loses at home tonight to Nacogdoches in a very low scoring game  44- 35 .   Not a very exciting game to watch.  Lots of missed shots and turnovers by both teams.  Key missed free throw shots down the stretch by Lufkin.   It was a big game that Lufkin needed to win , Nacogdoches was just better tonight.

Jacksonville coming to town Friday night at Panther Gym.

16-5A Boys Basketball

GAME 8
Nacogdoches beat Lufkin 44-35
Marshall beat Jacksonville 75-64
Whitehouse beat Hallsville 46-31
John Tyler Vs. Pine Tree- NO REPORT

Nacogdoches got a huge road win to sweep Lufkin, keeping the Dragons in first place.  Marshall overcame a slow start to win over Jacksonville to also remain in a first place tie with Nacogdoches.  Whitehouse's win over Hallsville forms a three way tie for third place between Lufkin, Hallsville, and the Wildcats.

Standings
Nacogdoches (7-1) , (22-8)
Marshall (7-1) , (17-8)
Lufkin (4-4), (16-9)
Hallsville (4-4) , (16-13)
Whitehouse (4-4) , (10-12)
John Tyler (4-4) , (6-13)
Pine Tree (2-6) (13-15)
Jacksonville (0-7) , (4-12)

Lufkin now plays Jacksonville, Whitehouse, Pine Tree, JT and Hallsville, all teams they should have a better than average chance to win against, before ending the season at home against Marshall.   Looks like Nacogdoches and Marshall will easily be the top two teams in the district headed toward the playoffs.

GAME 9
Marshall beat Whitehouse 64-39
Nacogdoches beat John Tyler 73-51
Lufkin beat Jacksonville 60-48
Pine Tree beat Hallsville 49-46

Pine Tree got the upset of the night with their win over arch-rival Hallsville.  The win keeps PT's dim playoff hopes alive another day....but it also prevented the Bobcats from pulling into a tie for third place with Lufkin.  Hallsville, Whitehouse, and JT are tied up for the fourth playoff slot.  Marshall made easy work of Whitehouse in front of a packed Maverick Gym to remain tied for first place with Nacogdoches who beat John Tyler.

Shaping up to be a good race down the stretch with the Nac/Marshall rematch looming.  Who will get the #4 slot?  Can any of them upset Lufkin?

Standings
Nacogdoches (8-1) , (23-8)
Marshall (8-1) , (19-8)
Lufkin (5-4), (17-9)
Hallsville (4-5) , (16-14)
Whitehouse (4-5) , (10-13)
John Tyler (4-5) , (6-14)
Pine Tree (3-6), (14-15)
Jacksonville (0-9) , (4-13)
