Lufkin Soccer 2018

Recommended Posts

Haven't posted much soccer news this year. Here's the latest on the playoff situation for Lufkin Panther soccer.

By JOSH HAVARD/The Lufkin News | Posted

It’s win or go home for the Lufkin Lady Panthers, as they will have a play-in game against the Conroe Tigerettes for the fourth and final playoff spot in District 12-6A.

That game will be played Monday at 6 p.m. at Madisonville High School.

Lufkin will look to make the most of its second chance against Conroe, which let, at least momentarily, a playoff berth slip out of its hands on Friday night.

With Lufkin dropping a 7-0 decision to the Lady Highlanders earlier Friday night, Conroe simply needed a win in order to punch its ticket to the postseason.

After scoring an early goal, the Tigerettes found themselves just 10 minutes away from a win and the fourth playoff spot in the district.

However, College Park’s Bri Bourbeau scored the equalizer and the teams eventually battled to a 1-1 tie.

That left the teams in a fourth-place tie. Lufkin finished with a 2-7-1 record while Conroe was 1-5-4. Each team finished with 7 points.

In the first week of district action, the Lady Panthers stormed to a 2-0 win over Conroe for their second straight district win. However, since then, Lufkin has an 0-7-1 record.

When the teams met in Conroe on March 6, the Tigerettes returned the favor with a 2-0 win that was also their only victory in 12-6A play.

The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the bi-district round of the playoffs where it will face District 11-6A champion Rockwall Heath later this week.

Panthers open playoffs Thursday night — The Lufkin Panthers will open their playoff chase by playing against the Mesquite Skeeters in the Class 6A Region II bi-district round of the playoffs on Thursday night at 7 at Tyler Junior College.

Lufkin finished with a 3-6-1 record to finish as the fourth-seeded team in District 12-6A. Mesquite was the first-place team in District 11-6A, where it just outlasted runner-up Longview.

WIN AND IN! Lufkin High School's Lady Panthers soccer team scored two second-half goals to beat Conroe 2-1 in a play-in game tonight in Madisonville. With the win, the Lady Pack advances to face Longview in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs, with the date (either Thursday or Friday), time and site to be determined. Ashley Walker scored a goal with 35 minutes left to tie tonight's game, then Skyla Valdez broke away from a defender and scored the game-winner with just 5:34 remaining. Lufkin's defense was strong throughout the game, allowing a goal with less than a minute less in the first half when Conroe was playing with the wind to its back.
