Lufkin Softball is looking good, the Panther baseball has some young talent to watch this year.  Lots of new names this year.  Lady softball has a great core returning, they will be fun to watch.

TYLER — Lufkin scored five runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh to rally for a 10-6 victory over No. 5 Rockwall-Heath in Game 1 of a best-of-three series Friday night at Mike Carter Field.

The Panthers trailed 5-2 heading into the sixth inning. RBI singles by Clayton Corley and Jonathan Dewberry cut the score to 5-4 before Davis Powell’s bunt brought Corley home for the tying run. An RBI single by Dylan Murphy and an RBI triple from Max Quick gave the Panthers a 7-5 lead.

Quick added a two-out hit in the seventh inning.

Quick, Dillon McDuffie and Clayton Gesford all had three hits for the Panthers, who had 17 hits in the contest. Quick and Tanner Green both had a triple, and McDuffie had a double. Dewberry and Murphy had two hits each, and Corley, Powell and Adam Holden all added a hit. Quick had three RBIs, and Powell drove in two runs.

Green pitched five innings, allowing five runs — four earned — on seven hits with two strikeouts and five walks. Murphy pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Heath scored three runs in the first inning and one each in the third and fourth to grab a 5-1 lead. Lufkin scored one run in the fourth, but an inning-ending double play kept the Panthers from doing more damage.

Game 2 of the series will be at 1 p.m. today at Mike Carter Field in Tyler. Game 3 will follow, if necessary.

TYLER — In a series that featured 57 runs in three games, an 11-run output by Rockwall-Heath in the final inning put the final touches on a series victory over the Lufkin Panthers.

Lufkin won the series opener on Friday, 10-6. Heath — the No. 5 team in Class 6A — bounced back with wins of 10-1 and 22-8 on Saturday at Mike Carter Field.

In a wild Game 3 that saw the Panthers rally from a 10-0 deficit to cut the score to 11-8, the Hawks sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and scored 11 runs on just three hits. Lufkin walked nine batters and used four pitchers in the frame.

Heath retired Lufkin in the bottom of the sixth inning — with a double by Dylan Murphy mixed in — to end the series.

Cody Cleveland scored in the top of the first inning of Game 3 to give the Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Heath then scored eight runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Luke Greenhill. Cleveland added an RBI triple in the inning. The Hawks added another run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Cleveland to push the score to 10-0.

Lufkin got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tanner Green had an RBI double, and Jonathan Dewberry and Davis Powell each had an RBI groundout.

An RBI single by Chris Teufel in the top of the fourth stretched the Heath lead to 11-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, Adam Holden reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Max McCarty. Green then had a two-run triple with two outs to score Holden and Alberto Fajardo to cut the score to 11-6.

A two-run single by Clayton Gesford in the bottom of the fifth trimmed the score to 11-8. Heath put the game away with 11 runs in the top of the sixth.

Kolton Eberlan, Murphy, Clayton Corley, Abel Garcia and Fajardo all saw time on the mound for the Panthers in Game 3.

Cole Stilwell pitched all six innings for the Hawks, allowing eight runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

Lufkin had five extra-base hits in the final game. Green had a triple and a double, and Powell, Murphy and Max Quick all had a double. Corley had two singles, and Gesford had a single.

Jake Wade led Heath with three hits.

In Game 2, Chandler Mauldin allowed one run on three hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning until a single by Gesford. Charlie Henson also had a single, and Gesford had a double later in the game. Lufkin’s lone run came on a groundout by Alex Barnett to score Murphy.

McDuffie took the loss, striking out two batters in 51⁄3 innings. Barnett also pitched. Wade and Miller Ladusau led the way with two hits each.

Lufkin held Heath’s Canaan Smith, an Arkansas pledge, to just one hit in Saturday’s two games after he hit a home run on Friday.

There were 11 batters hit by pitches on Saturday.

Lufkin ended its season with a 15-16 overall record.

Rockwall-Heath (29-7) advances to face Dallas Jesuit.
